What's New in SharePoint Server 2010 (Techworld)
SharePoint 2010” was presented to the general public by Steve Ballmer at the SharePoint Conference last year, and its market launch announced for the first six months of 2010. SharePoint 2010 represents more an evolution than a revolution. Whilst the release upgrade from SharePoint Portal Server 2003 to Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (in brief, to avoid tongue-twisters: MOSS) still involved numerous fundamentally new functional areas and areas of application, such as Business Intelligence and Workflows, this does not apply to the latest release upgrade.

Will SharePoint 2010 Stack Up? (IDM)
The much-anticipated release of SharePoint 2010 is due on May 12, but what will this really mean for the information management profession? Anthony Woodward examines what has been revealed with the beta preview. There are a couple of different ways to look at SharePoint 2010. Although the technology perspective is important, maybe the most critical is how it makes the lives of business users easier.

Google Docs Now Syncing with Outlook (PCWorld)
If you use Google Docs and Microsoft Office, you'll appreciate the new Outlook sidebar from Mainsoft. Called Harmony, and currently in beta, the sidebar lets you share, e-mail, download, upload, and edit your Google Docs right from your desktop using Outlook 2007. Starting on Tuesday, Harmony is available as a free download from Mainsoft's Website, and there is also a version for Microsoft SharePoint users. Here's a quick look at Harmony for Google Docs:

HP Touts Flash as Killer App Against Apple's iPad (PCWorld)
What will HP's Slate Tablet have that Apple's iPad won't? It's Adobe Flash, a key Internet technology that HP is touting as the key difference between the two platforms. And, HP is right, though how Flash support will translate into sales remains to be seen. While Apple has its App Store to provide applications for iPad users and iTunes for content, Flash gives HP users access to Web content and apps that iPad users can only dream of. Adobe's AIR provides a framework for developing applications for the HP Slate tablet and other devices that iPad also will not support.

Microsoft Warns Against Using 64-bit Office 2010 (Seattle PI)
While the 64-bit version of Office 2010 may offer more processing power, the drawbacks may not be worth it for enterprise customers, Microsoft says. In an FAQ about Microsoft's Office 2010 Technology Guarantee promotion, the company recommended that businesses use the 32-bit version of Office 2010 when it is released (in May for the enterprise sector, in June for consumers). Transitioning from 32-bit Office to 64-bit Office could pose technical problems.

Microsoft Hopes Consumers Will Go Gaga Over Windows Phone 7 (ChannelWeb)
Microsoft switched gears and built its Windows Phone 7 Series in line with consumer preferences rather than targeting business users as with past editions of the Windows Mobile operating system, a top executive in the software giant's consumer electronics business unit said Monday.

Microsoft Researcher Wins Turing Award (BusinessWeek)
The Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) has awarded the 2009 A.M. Turing Award to Charles P. Thacker, for his work in pioneering the networked personal computer. In 1974, while at the Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center), Thacker built a prototype of a desktop computer, called the Alto. It featured a number of innovations that have since become commonplace on PCs, including a television-like screen, a graphical user interface and a WYSIWYG (what-you-see-is-what-you-get) text editor.

Google Apps Marketplace Launches as New Cloud Computing Store (eWeek)
Google March 9 launched the Google Apps Marketplace, an online store selling enterprises business applications that integrate with and extend Google Apps. This will provide third-party software developers, such as Appirio, Intuit, Atlassian and others, a larger cloud computing channel into which to sell their applications. The Google Apps Marketplace will also challenge Salesforce.com, which has spent the last decade-plus fomenting its Force.com and AppExchange platforms. Google Apps Marketplace Product Manager Chris Vander Mey told eWEEK Google will take a 20 percent cut of application sales, recurring on subscriptions.

Configure SharePoint Server 2010 for Mobile Device Access (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
In a previous mobile blog post, we briefly introduced our supported mobility scenarios in Office 2010. Those mobility functions rely on support from SharePoint 2010 mobility. Today’s post describes how to setup your SharePoint server environment so you can take advantage of mobile access. Microsoft SharePoint 2010 includes support for using feature phones to access documents, lists, calendars on SharePoint 2010, performing people and document searches and receiving SMS alerts on SharePoint content.

Accessibility and SharePoint 2010 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
This is Tim McConnell, Program Manager on the SharePoint Foundation team. For the 2010 release, I’ve worked with SharePoint platform and partner teams to deliver powerful, reliable, accessible user experiences. Like Office, Office Web Applications, Windows, and teams across Microsoft, everyone in SharePoint strives to remove barriers that make software difficult to use. Sometimes improvements can be obvious, like the reorganized Ribbon user interface. However, some users may not notice changes that can transform another user’s experience. Accessible software respects the range of different users’ experiences, and it accommodates everyone.

Dude, My SharePoint Site is Read Only All of a Sudden (Brain Litter)
I've seen this enough times lately that it was time to blog it. The Issue: SharePoint Site that is normally accessible exhibits Read Only behavior and even for the site owner, could look a little like this…

Route Records to Other Site Collections (Shared Points for SharePoint)
The records center in SP2010 is greatly enhanced. With the new content organizer rules you can route records not only to document libraries in the same site, but also to other site collections. Here is a how-to to configure for that scenario. You need to set up three things before the content organizer allows you to send to another Site Collection:

Setting up Forms Based Authentication in SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint Magazine)
Welcome to the first of a 4 part series where I’ll be guiding you through the do’s and don’ts of setting up SharePoint FBA on different versions of the SharePoint platforms, being MOSS 2007 and SharePoint 2010 as well as outlining specific differences, which I’ve bumped my head on a few times over the years to realize and become fully aware of.
