SharePoint Upgrades on IT Executives' Agendas (IT Business Edge)
Like many IT executives, Hans Keller, senior director of IT operations for Erickson Living, is planning a move from an older version of Microsoft SharePoint to a newer one to gain new capabilities. In Erickson's case, the plan is to upgrade from an existing SharePoint 2003 implementation to SharePoint 2010 so SharePoint becomes the primary interface into the company's business intelligence reporting engine. Keller's team of 75 provides IT services for Erickson's 11,000 employees and residents of its 19 retirement communities. Keller, who will attend the IT Business Edge MidMarket CIO Forum in Orlando in March, shared his opinions on SharePoint's strengths and weaknesses with Ann All.

Using the PropertyBag Element to Assign Properties to Items in SharePoint 2010 (XML Journal)
When the NDA dropped, I mentioned how you could use the new PropertyBag element in a feature to write values into the property bag of a site.  I already thought that was going to be incredibly useful, but it turns out the power of this new element is even greater than I first realized.  At the time I noticed that the PropertyBag element had a URL attribute but I didn’t understand what it was used for at the time.  Now I do.  As I mentioned yesterday, I have been experimenting with exporting sites as .wsp files and I discovered that you can use this to write to properties of an existing list item.  Take a look at the following example, that I grabbed from the file it generated when exporting my site.  This applies properties to default.master.

CHART OF THE DAY: In Case You Had Any Doubts About Where Microsoft's Profit Comes From (Silicon Alley Insider)
Microsoft is the largest, most profitable software company in the world. And its profits are still being generated by the same engines that have driven Microsoft for years: Office, Windows, and its server division. (Meanwhile, its entertainment and devices division is only recently profitable again, and its online division is a money pit.)

Microsoft Plans Antipiracy Update for Windows 7 (ZDNet)
Microsoft said on Thursday that it is planning an update to Windows 7 that will close a number of loopholes that counterfeiters had used to thwart the operating system's built-in antipiracy measures. The Windows Activation Technologies Update for Windows 7, which will be released later this month, closes more than 70 "activation hacks", according to Joe Williams, general manager of Microsoft's Genuine Windows unit, responsible for anti-counterfeiting measures. The update will also check with a server periodically to see if there are further hacks that need to be addressed, though Williams said no personally identifiable information about the user will be sent to the server.

Microsoft Announces Office for Mac 2011 (PC World)
Microsoft provided the most extensive look yet into the next version of the Mac version of its popular Office suite on Thursday at Macworld 2010. The new product, Microsoft Office for Mac 2011, will arrive in time for the 2010 holiday season. Macworld spoke with several representatives of the company's Mac Business Unit, who told us the company is focusing on three things with this new release: better compatibility across platforms, improved collaboration tools, and a more refined user interface. Also, as Microsoft announced last August, the suite will include Outlook for Mac, which replaces Entourage as Office's e-mail client. And, in keeping with Microsoft's 2008 promise, the new version of Office will offer renewed support for Visual Basic, which was dropped in the 2008 version of the productivity suite.

Microsoft Stops Serving Windows Patch Blamed for Blue Screens (Computerworld)
Microsoft late Thursday said it had halted distribution of a security update linked to crippled Windows XP PCs that display the notorious Blue Screen of Death. According to users who posted complaints to Microsoft's support forum, after installing the update, one of 13 released Tuesday, their machines refuse to start up. Instead, their systems shudder to a stop at the blue screen which in Windows indicates a serious software error and crash.

10 Reasons Why a Google Fiber Network Could Reshape the ISP Landscape (eWeek)
News Analysis: Google announced recently that it plans to deliver a fiber network capable of delivering 1G-bps Web speeds. That's no small feat. The impact it could have on both the Internet and the tech industry as a whole cannot be understated. It could force changes in the entire U.S. ISP market, depending on whether Google eventually commits to widely deploying this 1G-bps network.

Microsoft Aims to Get Back in the Game in Mobile (Business Week)
Just a few years ago, Microsoft looked like a real contender in the mobile-phone market. Its Windows Mobile operating system ran about a quarter of all smartphones as recently as 2004, and it was gaining ground on leaders like Nokia. Then Apple and BlackBerry maker Research In Motion left the software giant in the dust. On Feb. 15, at a wireless industry conference in Barcelona, Microsoft will unveil its latest effort to get back into the game. The renamed Windows Phone operating system will "move the bar forward, not in an evolutionary way," promises Robert J. Bach, president of the company's entertainment and devices division.

SharePoint 2010 - Delivering on the Promise (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
My name is Jim Masson, and I’m the Group Program Manager for the Enterprise Content Management team within SharePoint. My team is part of the engineering team, and is responsible for designing the features around content management, including managing documents, web content, rich media assets, records, and a new service for managing shared content types and taxonomy. With the coming launch of SharePoint 2010, this seemed like a good time to ramp up the ECM team blog, and start a conversation about the SharePoint 2010 release. In the lead up to the official launch of the product and beyond, various members of the team will be posting details about the major feature areas and features within ECM in SharePoint 2010, including design overviews, walkthroughs, best practices, and eventually interesting case studies. I hope you will subscribe and participate with us in the conversation.

Working with Complex Data Types in Business Connectivity Services (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
Business Connectivity Services is an enabling technology for integrating data from external systems (e.g. line-of-business like an ERP or CRM system) with SharePoint 2010 and Office. Data in external systems is frequently exposed through granular web services with complex message structures. While parameter structures of almost any complexity are supported by the schema for external content types, they can create incompatibilities with presentation technologies in SharePoint and Office.

Fix for Message Size Issue in Outlook 2010 Beta (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
Recently, we posted information on the Outlook blog about a bug in the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta that increases the message size of some e-mails messages sent from the Microsoft Outlook 2010 Beta. The Office team has been hard at work building a fix for this issue, which is available immediately.

Should I Stay or Should I Go Now? SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
Another great debate happening in enterprises and corporations of all sizes.  I’ve heard this question way too many times today and the dynamics of what’s going on at SPTECHCON continues to bring up this with half the rooms on 2007 and half on SharePoint 2010.  The ultimate question… Should I stay with the proven SharePoint Server 2007 either in a green field deployment or even with the new project the business is asking me to deploy, or do I go with SharePoint 2010 and take whatever comes with that good and bad, the reward with the risk.

Joshua Haebets Shows 'How to Become a SharePoint 2010 Power User' at SPTechCon (The Bamboo Team Blog)
This SPTechCon represents a little bit of a different experience for me at a major SharePoint conference.  I'm typically stationed in front of the Marketing backdrop of the Bamboo booth, demonstrating or discussing our wide range of products with interested conference attendees.  I don't know if attendees are lured by our wacky name and wondering how it is connected to SharePoint, or if they recently downloaded a product from our storefront and got "bamboozled" - in a good way, of course.  For the next few days, however, I am the SharePoint user.  For this conference, I am very fortunate to be able to attend the various programs that SPTechCon has to offer.  These programs range from ways to improve your SharePoint environment to what's new in SharePoint 2010.

Guest Blog by Michael Womack - Adventures in Bamboo PM Central: "Bambooby Trap" #1... (The Bamboo Team Blog)
OK... for some of you, this may be considered a given, but I will consider it my first "Bambooby trap," or lesson learned, whichever you prefer.  In all fairness, I should note that this is probably more of a SharePoint issue than a PM Central issue.  Whichever the case, however, it is not a step you want to overlook when getting started with PM Central.  So here it is...
