SharePoint Portal Alternatives - A Credible List (CMS Wire)
It seems like just about everyone offers some type of solution that integrates with SharePoint (news, site). But for every potential integration, it seems like there's another vendor out there that offers a solution designed to replace SharePoint. And there are a number of alternative solutions to SharePoint on the market today. Not all are identical in capabilities, not all claim to be SharePoint alternatives — even though they are.

Bugs and Fixes: Google Attack Based on Unpatched IE Flaw (PCWorld)
In an announcement that made big news last month, Google said that it and numerous other companies had been hit by successful hacker attacks. The hacker's means of access: A critical unpatched ("zero-day") hole in Internet Explorer. Google says it discovered the attack in mid-December. The invasion originated in China, and according to the company, the hackers attempted to break into Gmail accounts and steal information about human rights activists. The IE flaw was exploited to install a Trojan horse that would allow full remote control over a compromised PC.

Google to Microsoft: Stop Being Evil (The Atlantic Wire)
For weeks, rumors of a proxy war between Microsoft and Google have animated techies. Many of their suspicions were validated Monday by a Wall Street Journal report detailing the dispute. Google accused Microsoft of orchestrating anti-trust lawsuits against Google from small start-up firms in Europe and the U.S. Microsoft denied foul play but acknowledged their role in encouraging small companies to file legal complaints if they have concerns about Google's monopolistic practices.

Free Ride Ends for Windows 7 RC Testers (Redmond Channel Partner)
If you're still running Windows 7 release candidate (RC), today is the day of reckoning. March 1 is the day that users face periodic shutdowns of the RC, as Microsoft previously stated. Windows 7 RC testers must either reinstall the operating system that was on their machines or install a paid-for licensed copy of Windows 7.

Microsoft Refuses to Confirm Windows Mobile Will Not Be Upgradable (eWeek)
Microsoft declined to confirm reports that smartphones running Windows Mobile 6.x will not be upgradable to Windows Phone 7 Series, its new operating system. Microsoft has made a point of enforcing strict hardware requirements for devices that run Windows Phone 7 Series, which one Microsoft executive reportedly suggested would prevent even newer devices such as the HTC HD2 from running the new operating system. Microsoft previously refused to confirm whether Windows Mobile would be rebranded as Windows Phones Classic once Windows Phone 7 Series is issued to the marketplace at the end of 2010.

GSA Shifts Cloud Computing Strategy (InformationWeek)
The General Services Administration has canceled its initial blanket purchase agreement and request for quotations for infrastructure-as-a-service offerings and will soon offer a new one, signaling a shift in its cloud computing strategy to evolve to meet the rapidly changing nature of the market. The old blanket purchase agreement had been 11 months in the making, but feedback from agencies and vendors forced the agency to take another look at how it was preparing to offer cloud infrastructure services to government agencies, according to Dave McClure, associate administrator for GSA's office of citizen services and communications.

Walkthrough of Enabling CRUD for SharePoint 2010 External Lists Using Visual Studio 2010 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
In our last blog of this series Walkthrough of creating a SharePoint 2010 external list using Visual Studio 2010 Beta, we introduced how to create a simple “Hello world” external list in SharePoint 2010 Beta using Business Data Connectivity Designer in Visual Studio 2010 Beta. In this blog, we will show you how to pull data from an external database into an external list and enable Create, Read, Update and Delete (CRUD) functions to the external list.

Referencing Javascript Files with SharePoint 2010 Custom Actions using SciptSrc (Jan Tielens' Bloggings)
If you’re an avid reader of this blog, you are probably aware of the fact that using Javascript plus SharePoint is a very powerful combination. In SharePoint 2007 there were a couple of techniques you could use to make sure your Javascript files would be referenced by SharePoint pages:

Timer Jobs to Copy and Delete Files in a Farm (SharePoint Blues)
There is sometimes a need to copy files in a SharePoint farm on different locations, than what can be specified in wsp-packages. Usually the best way to do it farm-wide, is to use Features and timer jobs. Timer jobs can be specified so that they are executed on every single machine in a SharePoint farm. In SharePoint 2007 the most common need we have had, is the copying of .resx and .browser files to a web application’s App_GlobalResources and App_Browsers directories. For most of you this is fairly basic information, but there might be readers and new comers to whom this might be interesting.

Executing BCS External Content Type Methods in C# (Lightning Tools Blog)
In our previous blog post we have gone through how to use the Business Connectivity Services object model to retrieve information about external content types which have been deployed to SharePoint’s Business Connectivity Services.

Is SharePoint 2010 Relevant? (Rebuttal) (End User SharePoint)
Mark Miller posted a thought provoking article at http://www.endusersharepoint.com/2010/02/23/is-SharePoint-2010-relevant/ asking his readers if SharePoint 2010 was relevant as a topic at conferences. To this I answer with my own question: Do you care about doing SharePoint right? That is do you care that SharePoint makes your users productive, is available, and performs as expected? Undoubtedly, you’re answer is an unwavering “YES”. To which I respond, YES! SharePoint 2010 is very relevant to you and as a SharePoint developer, administrator, or end-user and you should be chomping at the bit to get SharePoint 2010 into your organization.

Guest Blog by Michael Womack - Adventures in Bamboo PM Central: “It’s All About Dashboard Usability…" (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Moving on with my testing, I have been resolving some page layout issues with the "top level page" that displays the dashboard for our portfolio of projects.  Initially, when the top level page was produced, we placed three summary charts side-by-side, which resulted in a very wide page that required horizontal scrolling to see everything.  That's a 'no-no' in the Web design world (not to mention it is annoying for users, and an indication of a Web novice at work).
