MS SharePoint: Social Computing Tools to Integrate (CMSWire)
It's been noted that SharePoint 2010's improvements in the area of social computing are relatively impressive, but built-in features have a tendency to be outshone by third-party solutions. Ergo, we thought we'd round up a few of our favorites:

Why Microsoft Can't Figure Out What's Next (PCWorld)
If you haven't noticed, Microsoft has done a pretty good job with its core products lately: Windows 7, Office 2010, SharePoint 2010, Windows Server 2008 R2, and Visual Studio 2010 are all fine pieces of work. The Vista debacle seems like ancient history. Unfortunately for Redmond, customers have been trying for years to escape the old desktop upgrade treadmill, which Microsoft still relies on for the bulk of its revenue. And while I believe the personalized desktop metaphor will persist for the foreseeable future, the argument for tying that user-customized environment to a particular desktop or laptop gets weaker every day.

Microsoft Office Offers ‘Best PC Experience Possible’ (Business World)
The local unit of the software giant recently offered journalists a preview of the enhancements and new functions found in Microsoft Office 2010. “Office 2010 brings new capabilities that boost productivity and enable people to work faster and smarter at home, at the office or even on the go,” Microsoft Philippines’ information worker product manager Femee Cruz told reporters. “As a result, companies can save, innovate and grow.”

Managing Smartphones in Your Business (San Francisco Chronicle)
Over the last decade, smartphones have evolved from relatively simple mobile communications devices to robust palm-sized computing platforms that have transformed travel time from a loathsome efficiency drag to a productive part of any workday. Workers can now go more places with less downtime. But this benefit is offset somewhat by the increased burden they place on IT administrators to effectively provision and maintain them, and the security risks of carrying sensitive data on portable devices.

Cloud Computing Has Jumped the Shark (PCWorld)
At long last, after a couple of years of obsessive coverage by trade rags and analyst firms, I think "the cloud" has jumped the shark. We've been inundated by stories declaring that cloud infrastructure will mark the end of cap ex for IT -- and almost as many articles labeling the cloud as an unreliable, underpowered security nightmare. Is anyone listening anymore? If you ask me, this dog has had its day.

The PC Sales Boom Doesn't Really Matter (PC Magazine)
Studies point to a boom for the entire PC market this year and next, with a whopping 20 percent growth rate. This would be phenomenal if true, but what do such numbers mean when we look at the big picture? On a larger scale, there's more enthusiasm in the iPad and other tablet devices. The apparent surge in desktop sales is a function of tired old Windows XP machines falling apart after being in use for so long. Most of us have machines that should have been replaced two or three years ago.

Search Administration Reports in SharePoint Server 2010 (To the SharePoint)
SharePoint Server 2010 offers a new health monitoring feature: search administration reports. These provide crawl and query data to help you find and diagnose possible performance issues with your search system. There are three types of search administration reports:

SharePoint Vulnerability and Hotfix Recommendations (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
SharePoint has been pretty luck over the years to avoid the focus of hackers and those looking to create exploits. About a month ago a vulnerability was reported for SharePoint relating to a possible exploit of a 0day elevation of privileges via a DOS attack to help.  The workaround at the time was to disable the help feature in SharePoint.

SharePoint: Find your Productivity Loop (End User SharePoint)
Wal-Mart is once again on the annual Gartner AMR Research Top 25 Supply Chain list – at #4 this year. Love them or hate them, Wal-Mart has always competed brilliantly on the basis of their supply chain, focusing on their distribution efficiencies and using IT to help them drive economies of scale.  Now in their latest initiative, they are taking over transportation from their suppliers to reduce the cost of hauling goods.  The strategy is part of what Wal-Mart calls its “productivity loop” – efficiency ultimately reflected in lower bills for shoppers at the cash register and an increase in sales for Wal-Mart stores.

Feature Comparison Chart: Bamboo Alert Plus Web Part vs. SPAlert / My Alerts in SharePoint 2010 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Out-of-the-box, SharePoint 2010 provides more alerting features than ever before but, as you can see in the feature comparison chart below, Alert Plus provides greater flexibility in the areas of sending alerts based on specific column changes, distribution lists and the look and feel of e-mails sent ... and all without the need for a developer or SharePoint Administrator's intervention.
