Microsoft To Release 2010 Products Starting April (Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine)
Microsoft plans to release many of its 2010-branded products -- including Office 2010 -- to manufacturers next month. Other products scheduled to hit the release-to-manufacturing (RTM) stage in April are SharePoint 2010, Project 2010 and Visio 2010, according to Microsoft's announcement on Thursday. The RTM release means that manufacturers will be able to create images of Microsoft's software for installation on new PCs.

Is Cloud-Based SharePoint 2010 a Viable Enterprise Option? (CMS Wire)
A recent paper released by Forrester Research entitled SharePoint 2010: A More Viable Cloud Option argues that if you are looking at deploying SharePoint off the premises, with the introduction of SharePoint 2010,  now is a good time to do it.

Google Gmail vs. Hosted Microsoft Exchange (Computerworld)
More and more businesses are looking to hosted email services to reduce costs and ease management, and the choice often comes down to Google’s Gmail (the key component of Google Apps) or a hosted version of Microsoft Exchange.

Google Buys DocVerse, Steps Closer to Office Collaboration (Ars Technica)
Google has acquired a company that allows Microsoft Office users to edit their documents collaboratively on the Web. The acquisition of DocVerse will undoubtedly allow users who are married to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint to edit their documents through Google's services, thanks to a "small, nimble team of talented developers who share [Google's] vision."

Windows Phone 7: New, Useful and Very Likable (PCWorld)
Don't faint in disbelief. But me, the avid iPod Touch user, I'm getting excited about Windows Phone 7. With the major caveat that the operating system is in early beta and the hardware it runs on is a custom prototype for use by Microsoft employees, I like what I've seen so far.

Microsoft's Embrace of the Cloud is Not as Whole-hearted as Ballmer Claims (Computerworld)
Steve Ballmer is heavily promoting Microsoft's whole-hearted embrace of cloud computing, as evidenced by his sending out a memo to all Microsoft employees saying "when it comes to the cloud, we are all in." But that's not really the case. There are plenty of ways in which Microsoft doesn't truly embrace cloud computing, most notably in its upcoming release of Office 2010.

Microsoft Gives Rival Browsers a Lift (The New York Times)
Rivals of Microsoft’s market-leading Web browser have attracted a flurry of interest since the company, fulfilling a regulatory requirement, started making it easier for European users of its Windows operating system to switch.

Managing and Organising Documents (Perspectives on SharePoint)
Dux and I have been exchanging information as our new SharePoint 2010 course development progresses. This week I sent some information to him about some of the exercises in a word document as an attachment to an email. This is the kind of thing that happens a lot in any organisation but what happens to the document after it has been sent ? How can we ensure it is stored in the correct location and how do we group this together with related documents that share characteristics such as course number, author name etc.

8 More Things You Need to Know about SharePoint (End User SharePoint)
Most users like SharePoint in spite of some weaknesses. You already knew this, but strong user preferences for SharePoint sites translate into value in many ways.  SharePoint is intuitive, especially after you learn your first SharePoint application. SharePoint provides much more familiarity and consistency through its user interface than competing applications.  SharePoint makes it easy to build and administer sites for many types of user groups.  Most SharePoint users implement SharePoint in ungoverned sites that give them flexibility and ease of use that are unlike many of their prior deployments of document management or collaborative tools.  This favorable response and acceptance is a strength that you can leverage in your SharePoint deployments.
