Office, SharePoint 2010 Face Competition, Tight Economy (SearchWinIT)
Microsoft said that SharePoint 2010 and Office 2010 will ship on May 12, but enterprise adoption plans will hinge on PC upgrade cycles, economic conditions and growing competition from Google. Microsoft Office is still far more popular in enterprises than Google Docs is, but some observers say Google's collaboration capability offers better document-sharing features than SharePoint does. The collaboration feature lets users upload any type of document, presentation or spreadsheet -- including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents -- and share them over the Web from any computer or device, and it costs far less than a SharePoint license.

SharePoint on a VM: Can Peter Rescue a Nonprofit in Peril? (InfoWorld)
In 2005, Florida was hit hard by hurricanes -- not quite as hard as New Orleans, but damage ran to several million dollars. As a result, a nonprofit team of builders formed a disaster relief crew that's ready to go to work should the need arise in the future. They asked if I might help get their SharePoint implementation up and running. Since I'm not that great with a hammer, this was my way of lending a hand. But what I thought was a simple request turned into many hours adding users to Active Directory, configuring SharePoint pages, and configuring SharePoint permissions.

10 Reasons Why Security Problems Persist at Microsoft (eWeek)
News Analysis: As much as Microsoft would like security problems to just go away, they won't. The chances of Microsoft eliminating most of the software flaws that invite new attacks are slim to nil. But there are many things that Microsoft should do to improve the situation. We take a look at why security issues continue to haunt the software giant and what Microsoft can do about it.

Google's Big New Cloud Play: Should Microsoft Be Afraid? (San Francisco Chronicle)
Late last week, Google made another aggressive move to stay ahead of Microsoft in the online productivity tools space by acquiring DocVerse, a startup founded by two former Microsoft employees, known for tools that let users collaborate on Microsoft Office files on the Web. Google nabbed the three-year-old, San Francisco-based DocVerse for $25 million, according to the Wall Street Journal. What Google gets in return is the technology to make Microsoft Office operate more like Google Docs.

Windows Phone 7 Series FAQ (CNET)
We realise it's still early in the year, but we don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that the Windows Phone 7 Series is one of the biggest mobile tech stories to come out of 2010. Finally, Microsoft has delivered a mobile operating system that not only looks completely new and compelling, but also functional and competitive. However, there are still a number of unanswered questions, and ever since the big reveal at Mobile World Congress 2010, we've gotten a steady stream of reader emails about Windows Phone 7 Series.

Ribbon Hero Teaches Office In A Playful Way (ghacks)
There are two types of Office users: Those who know everything – or nearly everything – about the program and those that do not. The latter group usually has to look really hard, consult an online help, book or colleague if they have to do something in Microsoft Office that they have not done before at all or only scarcely in the past. Ribbon Hero is an add-on for Microsoft Office that can be used to learn new features of Microsoft Office in a playful way. The Microsoft Office add-on offers two modes. The first mode is basically showing a score that can increase or decrease depending on the user’s command of the Office program. Formatting text for instance will raise the score.

SharePoint 2010, SQL Server 2008 R2 & RBS: Just Because You Can Doesn’t Mean You Should (Andrew Connell)
One of the new things in SQL Server 2008 R2 is Remote Blob Storage (RBS) which allows admins to setup SQL to save data that would normally go into a BLOB field to be stored somewhere else using an RBS provider. This provider could store data on a cheaper disk solution (compared to the expensive disk solutions usually selected for SQL Server), to a SAN or maybe even into the cloud… it really doesn’t matter where. The point is that BLOBs can be kept out of a SQL Server DB.

Anonymous Access and Security in SharePoint (End User SharePoint)
The Question of the Day came in through Richard following Sharon Richardson’s EUSP Live Online Workshop on Security and Permissions in SharePoint 2007. From Richard: I have a browser-enabled InfoPath form that needs to allow anonymous submission. Permissions for form libraries do not allow anonymous add only view rights. I’ve tried a few setting changes to make this work but have not been successful. Let me know if you need more details of what I’m doing.
