REVIEW: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Beta Brings Already Solid Server into Modern Day (eWeek)
Office SharePoint is one of Microsoft's biggest success stories in the corporate world. SharePoint 2007 is still a solid performer for a variety of tasks, but it has been showing its age. eWEEK Labs' tests of the SharePoint 2010 beta show that Microsoft has done a good job of bringing the server squarely in step with the times, providing business-oriented social networking features and a new interface as well as beefed-up capabilities for the kinds of tasks for which businesses have been counting on SharePoint.

Google vs. SharePoint can be Apples vs. Oranges (CMS Watch)
Since the birth of SharePoint, Microsoft has marketed it as an internal collaboration platform, during a period when Intranet managers increasingly see collaboration as a high-priority service. Now, players such as Google and HyperOffice are trying to repeat SharePoint's success, using an on-again, off-again "SharePoint Killer" marketing tactic combined with the idea of creating a kind of Intranet-in-a-box alternative. However, technology buyers inevitably discover with any technology -- from Redmond or any competitor -- there's usually a wide gulf between the marketing hype and the implementation reality.

Enterprise Applications: LABS GALLERY: Microsoft SharePoint 2010 Beta Shows Platform Joining Modern Web Age (eWeek)
One can make the argument that SharePoint is one of the most successful Microsoft products of the last decade: It has become a very popular choice for businesses looking for a platform for managing content and documents; adding group collaboration and project management capabilities; and even building rich, interactive Websites. SharePoint 2007 has begun to show its age, but, with the beta release of SharePoint 2010, it looks like the Microsoft Web platform will join the modern age, adding increased social networking capabilities, rich Web development options and better standards support (including support for non-Internet Explorer browsers). SharePoint 2010 also takes into account the scope of the tasks businesses have adapted SharePoint for, and it does a better job of addressing enterprise content management needs.

94 More Secret Windows Shortcuts (ZDNet)
Last week the blogosphere went temporarily insane over a simple GUID that displays a list of Control Panel shortcuts. It’s not even close to deserving the “God mode” label, but I’m still hearing about it. As I noted in response, that’s only one of 39 GUID shortcuts available in Windows 7. But even those are esoteric and mostly of interest to programmers and geeks.

How Will Microsoft Shape Its Azure Platform in 2010? (IT Voir)
In 2009, Microsoft had announced the production date of its Azure platform, which is January, 2010. Now, the system is commercially available. The services will remain free to evaluate through January 2010, but chargeable after February 1st, 2010. According to market analysts, the current year is critical for Microsoft to build and perform its cloud based services in the market.

Google Docs: Not the Only Free Cloud Storage in the Sky (PC World)
In the coming weeks, Google Docs users will be able to store more of their important files online, where they can access them easily and share them with others, according to a Tuesday post on The Official Google Blog. Users will be able to upload a file as large as 250MB to Google Docs. They'll also get 1GB of free storage for files that aren't in one of the Google Docs formats, such as documents, spreadsheets, and presentations. Additional storage will cost 25 cents per GB per year.

Google Exit Threatens Chinese Internet, Analysts Say (The New York Times)
If Google leaves China, the country will suddenly become even more dependent on its main homegrown search engine, Baidu.com. And while that is likely to benefit the Chinese company in the near term, analysts say it could bode poorly for the long-term development of the Internet in China. Baidu is hardly an upstart. The company has 300 million users and a stock valued at more than $13 billion, and it is the market leader in China, by a wide margin, with a commanding 63 percent share to Google’s 33 percent, according to iResearch, a consulting firm.

The New Slide Show in PowerPoint 2010 (Microsoft Office 2010 Engineering)
Lately, the PowerPoint Team has been writing a lot about the new slide show experience. Transitions, animations, and video will look better and run smoother in PowerPoint thanks to the brand new rendering pipeline that ships with PowerPoint 2010. This recent post highlights the differences between this new, hardware-accelerated engine and the old engine that runs in PowerPoint 2007:

TechNet Misinformation: How NOT to use Kerberos for SharePoint Authentication (harbar.net)
I’m somewhat aggrieved this morning, as I found a new article from TechNet entitled “Using Kerberos for SharePoint Authentication”. Now while this article is not supposed to be the be all and end all it is very depressing that still now, in 2010, such inaccurate and in some cases 100% wrong information is being put out there by the vendor. This is especially true given the work I have done in this space over the last 18 months.

Creating Filtered Lookups in SharePoint 2010 with InfoPath 2010 (End User SharePoint)
One of the usual challenges with SharePoint 2007 was to build a lookup field between two lists but also apply a custom filter to the values being displayed. Let’s consider a simple scenario: You have two lists on your site: Projects and Project Tasks. You want to link each task in Project Tasks list with a project in Projects list. This was simple even in v2007, you only had to create a lookup column and you were good to go.

SharePoint 2010 Upgrade: Test-SPContentDatabase - Key to Successful Upgrade (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
One of the greatest enhancements to upgrade to SharePoint 2010 is the work that was done in PreUpgradeCheck and in the powershell commandlets of Test-SPContentDatabase and Upgrade-SPContentDatabase.  Test-SPContent Database is very similar to the stsadm command PreUpgradeCheck, but it works with both 2007 and 2010.  This command can be pointed at a database that isn’t part of the farm!  That’s the coolest.  If you want to see how a content database would fare in a given farm you can run the Test-SPContentDatabase command and get information on issues that would impact the farm you’re importing it into.  Is the database compatible?  Does it have all the assemblies installed, all the relevant features and solutions all set?  Well run the commandlet to find out.

How to Show the Most Recent Comment on Items in a SharePoint Tasks List (SharePoint Blank)
When we left off last week, I'd reached a point in my test environment that matched the case that I was attempting to address: rather than having the most recent comment on an item in a tasks list render in the Comments column as desired, I was instead greeted with a View Entries... hyperlink.  The time has now come for the exciting reveal of how to surface the actual comment.

Microsoft Updates
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 cannot crawl a form-based authenticated Web site when an "HTTP 302" error message is received during the authentication session (Microsoft Support)
When Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 crawls a form based authenticated Web site, the form based authenticated Web site sends back an "HTTP 302" error message during the authentication session. This "HTTP 302" error message contains a long redirection location. In this case, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 cannot access the redirection location. Therefore, the process for crawling a form based authenticated Web site fails completely.
