The Undeniable Influence of SharePoint 2010 (Fierce Content Management)
Some people love SharePoint. Some people hate it. But however you feel about it, you can't deny its influence on the market. When SharePoint 2010 was released in the spring, you could hear the bang across the enterprise content management space, yet when it comes to SharePoint 2010 or its predecessors, there is an eerily similar pattern: A large hype cycle followed by the release and the sudden realization that it hasn't quite lived up to the pre-release publicity. To its credit, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) has tried to deal with a lot of the issues and problems people complained about in 2007 with the 2010 release, but until we begin to hear actual stories on the ground, it's always hard to separate the hype from reality.

Microsoft 'Orleans': A New Cloud Development Platform? (eWeek)
Microsoft is working on a next-generation cloud programming model and related tools to possibly augment its cloud strategy already being played out with Windows Azure, according to documents uncovered by a prominent Microsoft observer.

Microsoft Needs a Whole New Touch OS on Tablets, Not Windows 7 (myce)
As of the writing of this post, Apple has sold approximately four million iPads. This number is estimated to be higher than the combined sales of Windows tablets over the last eight years. That’s right, Microsoft has been making tablet computers for years, so what are they doing wrong that Apple got right and what do they need to do if they want to compete?

Windows 8 Evolution Needs to Take It Beyond Windows 7 (Softpedia)
While Windows 7 has yet to celebrate its first year on the market, Windows 8 has been in planning since early in 2009, well before Microsoft had signed off on its predecessor. Certainly, at just 10 months since Windows 7’s GA (General Availability), and half a year before Windows 7 SP1, it is still far too early to talk Windows 8.

Microsoft Touts Mac-Windows Compatibility in Office 2011 (Reuters)
Microsoft today announced that the next version of Office for the Mac will include a pair of key features that debuted in the Windows edition of Office 2010 earlier this year. Office for Mac 2011, which is slated for an October launch, will offer "Sparklines," cell-sized Excel charts, and in-app image editing tools, two features that first appeared in Office 2010, the more popular Windows edition that hit the retail market last May.

InfoWorld Review: Microsoft Silverlight 4 vs. Adobe Flash 10.1 (InfoWorld)
HTML5, with its promises of plug-in free browsing, a 3D graphics and animation API, built-in video and audio tags, an offline data store, and Web Workers to manage long-running background processes, would seem to spell the end of proprietary RIA (rich Internet application) platforms. But the reports of the death of Flash and Silverlight, as the saying goes, have been greatly exaggerated.

SharePoint 2010 Products: Upgrade and the Fabulous 40 Application Templates (To the SharePoint)
Many of you have used the "Fabulous 40 templates" that were created for Windows SharePoint Services 3.0. Some of these templates were created as site admin templates (.stp files) and some as server admin templates (.wsp files). Microsoft is not releasing new versions of these templates for SharePoint 2010 Products. Also, .stp  files are deprecated and can't be used to create new sites when you upgrade to SharePoint Server 2010 or SharePoint Foundation 2010. So, what do you do when you want to upgrade?

SharePoint 2010 Upgrade Decision Tree (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
I love it when the community comes together.  You can see the twitter discussion with Todd Klindt, Rick Taylor and Benjamin Athawes (on his blog) that resulted in a few different decision trees to help us better discuss the recommendations of In Place Upgrade vs. Database attach and really one of my favorites, the hybrid.  In this recommendation decision tree, you’ll I rarely recommend in place without combining with database attach to mitigate the risks of full disk and other issues not captured by preupgrade check or in the prerequisite assessments such as SQL related patching issues.  The only case is in the smallest of deployments where people are using the basic install which I don’t recommend anyway.

SharePoint Design Multi-Browser Testing (Liam Cleary [SharePoint MVP])
Like most of you out there one of the things that it is compulsory now is testing the new SharePoint design or functionality within multiple browsers. Historically if like me you would have installed everything on your machine and used that for testing the design it can be a little tedious to open each browser one by one just to check the design. For me this has changed now, not only can we use the features within the Expression Web 4 Super preview to show side by side browsers such as below:

How To: Hide Left Side Navigation on Home Page (SharePoint Branding & Design)
I was recently asked: "How can I hide the side nav bar on the main homepage layout ?? I want to be able to use the side NAV with in the team site etc. etc., but I don't want it on the front page.. " There are a couple of ways to do this in SharePoint 2010. If you are using a non-publishing site you can add a Content Editor Web Part to the page and add the following to the HTML Source.

Bamboo to Present 'Process Automation Options for SharePoint' at Best Practices Conference (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Everyone here at Bamboo is excited about our recent release of Bamboo Workflow Conductor, which is a really easy to use and affordable solution for everyone out there (myself included) who is just way too intimidated by workflows to actually create and use them.  We've already seen an overwhelmingly positive response to Conductor and are excited to be able to have the opportunity to show it off at next week's Best Practices Conference right here in Reston, VA.  Jeff Tubb, Product Manager for Conductor, will be leading the session on "Process Automation Options for SharePoint" on Wednesday, August 25 at 4:30pm in Reston Suite A.  Please be sure to join us, as it's going to be a great session with tons of useful information on how to best implement workflows in your organization.  Even better news: we'll be giving away a free copy of Workflow Conductor at the end of the session (value: $4,500) to one lucky attendee!

Survey Results – When are Companies Going to Upgrade to SharePoint 2010? (The Bamboo Team Blog)
One of the key questions for Bamboo at this moment is, "When do you plan to upgrade to SharePoint 2010?"  SharePoint 2010 is obviously white-hot at the moment.  There are dozens of conferences and events dedicated to SharePoint 2010, and everybody is talking about it.  At the same time, it's been a matter of some debate whether SharePoint 2010 is relevant to most organizations over the next 12-24 months.  Mark Miller at EndUserSharePoint.com recently wrote:
