Office 2010: What's in it for You? (Earth Times)
When Microsoft releases Office 2010 later this year, will it be an upgrade worth pursuing, or will it, like Office 2007, be one that you can easily let pass? That's a question that's no doubt on the minds of many existing Office users - as well as more than a few executives at Microsoft. Office 2010 can easily be seen as analogous to Windows 7 in that it represents Microsoft's latest chance to convince people that they have really been listening to their concerns.

Microsoft, Apple Could Make Bing an iPhone Default, Says Report (eWeek)
Microsoft and Apple are possibly engaged in discussions to make Bing the iPhone's default search engine, according to an online report. Although Microsoft has refused to confirm the rumor, porting Bing onto the iPhone would likely increase Microsoft's market share in the U.S. mobile search space, where it lags behind Google.

Microsoft Calls for Cloud Computing Transparency (PC World)
Cloud computing vendors need to band together to create rules on privacy and security or face the prospect of having the U.S. Congress pass regulations, Microsoft General Counsel Brad Smith said Wednesday. During a speech at the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C., think tank, Smith called for new "truth-in-cloud-computing" principles that would let consumers and businesses know how their information will be accessed by service providers and how it will be stored online.

Intuit and Microsoft Partner: More PaaS to put in Your aaS Environment (ZDNet)
Intuit and Microsoft have jointly announced a partnership that will see Intuit able to reach out to the huge  Microsoft .Net and Azure developer network. According to the release: The two companies plan to integrate the capabilities of their cloud services platforms – the Intuit Partner Platform and Microsoft Windows® Azure platform™ – to enable developers and channel partners to deliver solutions to the millions of employees within businesses that use QuickBooks® financial software. In addition, the two companies will provide small businesses with Microsoft’s cloud-based productivity applications via the Intuit App Center.

European Union Clears Oracle's Purchase of Sun (ComputerWorld)
The European Commission granted Oracle an unconditional approval to take over Sun Microsystems on Thursday, following a controversial and drawn out examination of the deal. The deal still awaits approval in other jurisdictions, including Russia and China, but approval in the European Union is a big step forward for a deal hailed by some as transformational for the entire software industry, and by others as the killer of one of the most successful open source programs in the world, the MySQL database.

Using SharePoint Workflows with Business Connectivity Services (BCS) (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)

How to Remove Corrupted SharePoint Sites – Preparing for SharePoint 2010 Upgrade (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
SP2 had a number of enhancements designed around making it easier to upgrade to SharePoint 2010.  One such new feature that wasn’t popularized is your ability to find and remove corrupted, broken sites known as orphans. Creating a Personal Brand - Inside and Outside the Enterprise (Essential SharePoint)
When I read about the LinkedIn and Twitter partnership late last year, I wondered whether people would really think that it was the "perfect combination" that Twitter founder Biz Stone was quoted as saying in CIO.  I reached out to Mauro Cardarelli, a master Tweeter and my resource on all things Twitter for his opinion.  He didn't mince words - he hates the integration and prefers to maintain separate identities:  LinkedIn for business and Twitter for his "personal brand."

SharePoint Self Review System for Students (SharePoint in Education)
This week we have been working on a new Self Review system for students at Twynham School. This uses SharePoint to allow students to reflect on how they are performing half way through their first year of A-level. The project is just beginning so needs some polish but I thought it would be useful to show a demo of where we are at the moment. Have a look at the video below and let me know any thoughts on what we are doing and how we could make it better.

Installing Printers Through SharePoint (End User SharePoint)
A good while ago, there was a lot of discussion on the Microsoft Technet forums about how to use SharePoint to allow end users to install network based printers.  A few ideas were batted back and forth and ultimately, it came down to uploading a bunch of links that pointed to each printer object on the closest server (i.e. \servernameprintername).
