Microsoft's application virtualization software - App-V - has been updated to fully support the up-coming next edition of Office. On Monday, the company delivered App-V 4.6, the first release of its application virtualization software engineered - it claimed - to work closely with Office. App-V is a component of Microsoft's Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP).

Enterprises that are starting to plan Windows 7 and Office 2010 migrations are getting new deployment tools this week that tackle thorny issues related to application compatibility and desktop management. On Monday, Microsoft launched App-V 4.6, the latest version of its application virtualization offering, which adds support for 64-bit Windows client and server platforms and enables virtual applications to be deployed in Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), terminal services, and local desktop scenarios. Microsoft acquired the technology that powers App-V in its June 2006 acquisition of Softricity.

Even though the platform has garnered quite a bit of praise and buzz, an analyst is suggesting that it might not be enough to turn the tide and Microsoft may need to resort to buying another cell phone maker.

U.S. communications regulators will unveil on March 17 a blueprint aimed at bringing fast affordable Internet access to more than 90 million Americans being held back by fees and technology. The Federal Communications Commission said on Tuesday that the long-awaited National Broadband Plan will try to help connect 93 million Americans to high-speed Internet to find jobs, access educational and healthcare services, and reduce household energy costs.

When creating a document in Office, you can store it directly to SharePoint by typing your SharePoint site’s URL in the "File Name" field. This will open the SharePoint site where you can select the document library you wish to store your document to. But if you need to create a folder in the target document library, this isn’t possible, because the "New folder" icon is grayed out.

So you’ve installed SharePoint 2010, everything seems to be working fine, site is configured and you are about to notify the client that they can start playing on that development environment.  After sending our all your notifications, the client requests a minor change and you quickly navigate to central administration only to find that it is not rendering and the “very scary” error message (with correlation id) is displayed.
