SharePoint—The Collaboration Tool of Choice (University of Texas)
For departments, units and project teams wanting to work remotely with colleagues from across campus, SharePoint is becoming the collaboration tool of choice. As of February 2010, there were 9200 active student, faculty, staff, and affiliate SharePoint users on our campus. 112 SharePoint sites have been launched and are in use, creating a total SharePoint database size of 190 Gigabytes (GB).

IE 9, Windows Phone in the Mix (CNET)
This year's Mix trade show won't be the first time that people hear about Internet Explorer 9 or Windows Phone 7 Series, but it is the event where developers will get enough information to start creating products targeting the new browser and mobile operating system.

I'm Not Breaking Up with Windows, but We're Seeing Other People (TechRepublic)
For many enterprises, 2010 is going to be the year they decide whether or not to jump on board with Windows 7, or stick with Windows XP indefinitely until there’s a compelling reason to migrate to something new. As TechRepublic’s CIO Jury showed, it’s still a 50/50 tossup. Personally, I’m going through the same thing, albeit, on a much smaller scale. While our company (CBS) is still officially standardized on Windows XP, in my work for TechRepublic I test lots of different machines and use multiple operating systems. Last week, for example, I used five different operating systems on eight different computers.

Microsoft’s Windows and Google’s Linux (Android), the Mobile Race (Softpedia)
Will Microsoft slapping “7” on the rebranded Windows Mobile (now Windows Phone) OS be enough to counter Google’s Linux for mobile phones? It’s easy to expand the Microsoft vs. Google antithesis to Windows Phone and Android – proprietary vs. open source, paid vs. free, Windows vs. Linux, etc. Most would undoubtedly agree that Windows Phone and Android being placed at opposite poles of the mobile-phone world is more than just a matter of perception.

Finding Comfort in the Cloud (Barron's)
CLOUD COMPUTING, TO SOME PEOPLE, simply means outsourcing your information-technology department to somebody else. And while it can mean that, cloud computing is really more complex and multifaceted. Saving money, improving performance and increasing the flexibility of existing systems are just some of the advantages.

Microsoft Launches User Experience Kit at SxSW (eWeek)
At the South by Southwest (SXSW) conference in Austin, Microsoft launched its new User Experience Kit. In a March 12 blog post on the Microsoft Silverlight team blog, Microsoft said the "Microsoft User Experience Kit is targeted at technical and creative leads who want to better understand the tools, technologies, and scenarios that span Microsoft’s User Experience ecosystem.  Key topics range from 'Building Immersive Multi-channel Solutions using Expression Studio' to 'High fidelity and high Performing Desktop Touch Applications using Windows 7' to 'Web Branding and Audience Targeting using SharePoint.'"

Who Hates the National Broadband Plan? (PC Magazine)
Are you ready for more Internet? That's the question that U.S. regulators will soon be asking, as Reuters is reporting that the Federal Communications Commission is set to reveal the National Broadband Plan on March 16. While some details of the plan remain to be seen, FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has already mentioned a few of the key highlights that the FCC will be recommending to Congress. These include a goal to connect 100 million Americans to 100 Mbps Internet within 10 years and the desire for television stations to give up unused spectrum to assist a growing market for wireless services, amongst others.

Hello everyone! My name is Sangya Singh and I am a Program Manager on the SharePoint engineering team working on Web Content Management (WCM) features. Analysts’ Review of SharePoint 2010 (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
As we announced last week, SharePoint Server 2010 will RTM next month. We’ve been keeping you updated on the documentation and guidance that we’re providing but the technology analyst community has also been very busy talking to their clients about SharePoint 2010 and publishing their take on the new release. Examples include Forrester’s recent report , “SharePoint Server 2010: An Evolutionary Step Toward Content Centric Middleware” and Gartner’s, “SharePoint 2010 Steps Up to the ECM Plate”.

Authenticating to Your External System (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
When getting acquainted with BCS, most new users work against an unsecured backend. This means they can ignore the issue of authentication and focus on the fun stuff, like making external lists and searching external content. But real world external systems have all kinds of sensitive data: payrolls, inventories, credit card numbers, and more. The permissions built into BCS can help out, but since users could simply connect directly to the external system without using BCS, the external system needs to have its own authentication turned on too.

Configuring Profile Image Export in SharePoint 2010 (Matthew McDermott)
It’s no secret that I am thrilled with the new social features of SharePoint 2010. I am most excited about the new Profile Picture handling. I strongly believe that the more we can show the faces of our colleagues to one another the more connected we will feel. Clearly Microsoft feels that way as witnessed by the many features that make use of the Profile Image like the Activity Feed and Colleagues list.

Webdesigners vs. SharePoint: The Body ID (Waldek Mastykarz)
Body id is a cool webdesign trick that allows designers to easily alter the layout of a page using nothing more than a single property and some CSS styling. Using the body id you can define one HTML page structure for the whole site and then, by changing the single value of the body id attribute, you can create new experiences by styling the different pieces of the page in a totally different way. While it sounds very easy and it is very easy with HTML, this trick can get very challenging when used with SharePoint.

8 Ways to Use SharePoint for Social Computing (End User SharePoint)
You probably are aware that SharePoint is a great fit for most organizations document management and collaboration needs. What about social computing?  SharePoint gives you a good starting point. What do you do when SharePoint falls short? Here are 8 ways companies can extend SharePoint’s out-of-the-box capabilities to better fit their social computing vision.
