Microsoft Quashed Effort to Boost Online Privacy (Wall Street Journal)
The online habits of most people who use the world's dominant Web browser are an open book to advertisers. That wasn't the plan at first. In early 2008, Microsoft Corp.'s product planners for the Internet Explorer 8.0 browser intended to give users a simple, effective way to avoid being tracked online. They wanted to design the software to automatically thwart common tracking tools, unless a user deliberately switched to settings affording less privacy.

Microsoft to Release IE9 Public Beta on Sept. 15 (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft on Thursday announced it will release a public beta of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) on Sept. 15, a little less than five weeks from now. Only a minority of Windows users will be able to try the beta, however. IE9 will not work on Windows XP, the aged operating system that powers nearly 68% of all PCs running Windows. The new browser requires either Windows Vista or Windows 7.

Windows Phone 7 Through a Developer's Eyes (TechRepublic)
I recently heard an excellent talk from Windows Mobile Device Application Development MVP Chris Craft about development for Windows Phone 7. Although he did not go into detail about how to put an application together, he did spend nearly 90 minutes explaining the important things to be aware of and fielding some very tough and in-depth questions from the audience. I’m sharing what I learned because it may help you decide if Windows Phone 7 development is a path that you want to pursue.

Internet Security in a Cloud Computing Environment (CIO)
We are all aware that the computer is one of the most important things that we are using these days. In the future, we will be more challenged to use computer because of the several factors that affect the clouding environment in the internet system most especially.

Why Does Everyone Hate Microsoft? (CNN Money)
Why don't investors love Microsoft? Shares of the software giant are down 19% so far in 2010, which is considerably worse than the performance of the tech sector as a whole. Of its main rivals, only Hewlett-Packard and Google have fared worse -- and about half of HP's drop happened following the Mark Hurd scandal.

Enterprise 2.0: All Social Software is Not Created Equal (CMS Wire)
You may not completely agree, but some people say that SharePoint 2007 was a disruptive collaboration technology. Was it the best solution on the market for enterprise collaboration? Probably not. But it did show us a different way of sharing. And it did bring forward a number of new solutions for the enterprise commonly called social software.

Around the Blogosphere
We’re Serious - Don’t Modify Your Database or Face Consequences (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
Today in SharePoint land there was a forum post about what’s ok and not ok around modifying the database.  It’s been a long standing position by the SharePoint team to keep your paws out of the database, but recent rules added into the preupgradecheck go further to make sure the schema is in the expected state.

SharePoint 2010 Fixed Width Master Pages Revisited (Elumenotion)
This post is an update to this post about fixed width pages I wrote when SharePoint 2010 was still in beta. If you follow the instructions in that post you'll get a fixed width page, but it will have an unnecessary (and ugly) vertical scroll bar in the page's main content area. The problem is in a function in init.js, FixRibbonAndWorkspaceDimensions. You can read about the work this function does in this post about ribbon positioning. FixRibbonAndWorkspaceDimensions does exactly what it says, but if you change the vertical layout of your page or add a footer it will give you fits. It does math and changes the size and position of various div elements independently of your CSS!

"Object Reference Not Set to an Instance of an Object" When Using SharePoint's ClientContext.Current in Silverlight (Jan Tielens' Bloggings)
SharePoint 2010 and Silverlight is a fantastic combination, especially when you use the Client Object Model for Silverlight to access SharePoint data. But maybe you’ve encountered the following situation: your Silverlight application works great when it’s hosted in the out-of-the-box Silverlight Web Part, but when you build your own custom Web Part to show the Silverlight Application it just doesn’t work anymore: the browser tells you there is an Error on page. The details of the error are: Unhandled Error in Silverlight Application Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Getting an Inventory of All SharePoint Documents Using Windows PowerShell (SharePoint Automation)
I got an email today asking if I had anything that would generate a report detailing all the documents throughout an entire SharePoint Farm. As this wasn’t the first time I’ve been asked this same question I decided that I’d just go ahead and post the script for generating such a report.

Mindsharp SharePoint 2010 Power End User (Day 4) (SharePoint 2010)
Here we are on Day 4 of Mindsharp's SharePoint 2010 Power End User (Beta) class, and it was another jam-packed day of information. Day 4 is about the time when most people over the age of 25 (not that I'm admitting to being in that group) start to notice a permanent hunch in their shoulders and an aching ear from that headset, so kudos to our instructor, Kay McClure, for keeping things up-beat and fresh! The well-timed breaks help out a lot, too.

Guest Blog by Dave Chennault: BPOS Wave 14... How it Will Change Everything in the Next 12 Months (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I see a lot of you liked my first post on the iPad and SharePoint.  Thanks for checking it out. I want to spend a few paragraphs sharing a vision of what the next release of BPOS might mean to you - especially in the SharePoint space.  My partner and I believe that the next release of BPOS will set off another huge wave of opportunity - similar to what we all went through with SharePoint 2007 - remember that?   It is about to happen all over again...

Mindsharp SharePoint 2010 Power End User (Day 3) (SharePoint 2010)
It's Day 3 of Mindsharp SharePoint 2010 Power End User (Beta) class, and I have to say that I have really been looking forward to work this week (not that I don't normally, but training is a special treat)! I love learning new things, and there's definitely a lot to learn with SharePoint 2010 - kudos to Microsoft for lots of great changes.

Creating a Baseline Schedule Within a Project in Microsoft Project 2010 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
August is traditionally the month when most people take their summer vacations, but the PM Central team is looking forward to the fall, when SharePoint Project Management Central™ R2.0 will be released. One of the great new features in R2.0 is the ability for project managers (PMs) to baseline their schedules. (A baseline is a snapshot of a project schedule that includes information about tasks, resources and assignments.) Project managers use baselines to take snapshots of the project values that were approved and agreed upon. They also use baselines to make sure that the values don't change significantly from the original project plan.
