We've seen an overwhelmingly positive response to Workflow Conductor and are excited to be able to have the opportunity to show it off at this week's Best Practices Conference right here in Reston, VA. Jeff Tubb, Product Manager for Conductor, will be leading the session on "Process Automation Options for SharePoint" on Wednesday, August 25 at 4:30pm in Reston Suite A. Please be sure to join us, as it's going to be a great session with tons of useful information on how to best implement workflows in your organization. Even better news: we'll be giving away a free copy of Workflow Conductor at the end of the session (value: $4,500) to one lucky attendee!

Time to Beef Up Code Retention Policies on Your SharePoint Servers (SearchWinIT)
Today, many medium to large organizations seem to have a team of people whose job it is to review and approve software patches. As a SharePoint administrator, placing the burden of patch management onto another team may initially seem like a great idea. However, doing that can mean losing some control over the SharePoint servers.

5 Ways to Ruin Your SharePoint 2010 Upgrade (CMSWire)
Recent research has shown that a vast number of organizations are looking to upgrade to the latest version of SharePointSharePoint 2010  (news, site). Unfortunately there is often a lack of understanding in how to upgrade the platform to maximize business value whilst ensuring a smooth transition for users and administrators. Upgrading such a critical piece of software such as SharePoint requires much more than simply thinking about the technical issues.

Report Looks at Microsoft Office Alternatives (GCN)
Organizations have been considering alternatives to Microsoft Office, but not as replacements quite yet. A study published this month by Forrester Research, "The Next Wave of Office Productivity" by Sheri McLeish, suggests that the current economic downturn may have organizations considering other solutions for word processing, spreadsheet and presentation needs. Organizations appear to be eyeing Web-based and installed productivity suites for segments of their workforce as an alternative to paying Microsoft's recurring Office licensing fees.

Microsoft BPOS Cloud Suite Hit by Access Problems (Reuters)
Access to various Microsoft hosted software products for businesses in North America was affected due to a performance issue with its data center in the region on Monday. The problem lasted more than two hours, between 8:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. U.S. Eastern Time, and impacted "some customers in North America" who experienced "intermittent access to our data center," Microsoft said in a statement.

CodePlex Foundation Aims to Evolve Commercial Open Source (developer.com)
Almost a year after launching, the Microsoft-sponsored open source CodePlex Foundation is looking ahead to an ambitious agenda in its second year of life. Paula Hunter, the executive director of the CodePlex Foundation, told InternetNews.com that new efforts around branding, contributions and governance at the CodePlex Foundation are underway. The foundation is also planning to roll out a host of additional projects, with some to be officially sponsored by Microsoft and others that the software giant will not formally support.

Cost is Only Part of the Gov 2.0 Open Source Story (O'Reilly Radar)
Bryan Sivak, chief technology officer for the District of Columbia and a speaker at the upcoming Gov 2.0 Summit, has smartly mixed healthy realism with enthusiastic support for open source in government. The result is a message that resonates beyond open source evangelists.

What the Masters Think About SharePoint 2010 - PowerPivot (SharePoint Thoughts)
PowerPivot is definitely one of most interesting pieces in SharePoint 2010.  Don't get me wrong - there are lot of other things that I really like (services architecture, managed metadata, etc.) but PowerPivot really stands heads and shoulders as the best new "power toy". Before I dive into some bullet points why... let me frame the conversation a bit...

Remove the Gap Between the Icon and Title in SharePoint 2010 Document Library (Chris and Daves SharePoint and Tech Blog)
It’s hard to explain what I mean in words so here is a picture:
See how the icons do not sit right next to the title of the item and you are left with masses of white space. This bug only seams to appear in IE8 and in Firefox it works just fine. The picture below shows the same thing in Firefox:

Subscribing to SharePoint Alerts with Different Email Addresses (SharePoint Blank)
As my professional responsibilities have shifted over the past year or so, an unfortunate side-effect of the changes in my role has been how little time I've been able to devote to SharePoint Blank.  An especially unfortunate result of the limited time I've had available to devote to this blog is that I have a backlog of questions that have been submitted by readers that I just haven't had the time to devote to researching and answering in a timely manner.  Alas, I don't see the likelihood of a sudden increase in my available time to Blank (to employ the usage I've adopted), but I will make an effort to give priority to the backlog of questions when I am able to squeeze in some time to Blank going forward.

Bamboo is SharePoint 2010-ready, Are You? (Part 1) (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Wow, can you believe it?  Over 60% of Bamboo customers plan to move to SharePoint 2010 within the next 12 months!  That is just an amazing amount.  What, you don't know what I'm talking about?  Did you miss Steve Gaitten's post last week, Survey Results – When are Companies Going to Upgrade to SharePoint 2010?  It is very eye-opening, and I think it's a must-read.

New Major Releases Coming Soon to a SharePoint Near You, Part 3 of 3: List Rollup Web Part (The Bamboo Team Blog)
For the conclusion of this sneak peek series, I will be introducing the new List Rollup Web Part.  As with the two products which preceded it in this series, List Rollup Web Part has been a part of the Bamboo family of products for many years now, with a large following in the SharePoint community.  You've told us in your feedback that although the rollups produced by List Rollup Web Part meet your needs, the List Rollup Web Part interface is difficult to use to build rollups, and the resulting rollups are slow to show large results.
