SharePoint, Be My Valentine: From a Glorified Network Share to an Enterprise Platform (CMS Wire)
How did you celebrate Valentine’s Day? Red roses? Fancy dinner? Perhaps, a romantic movie date? I spent mine with family and SharePoint friends over dim sum (coincidentally it’s also Lunar New Year’s day too!). As I was reminiscing how the relationship I have with my wife has blossomed through the years, it dawned on me that it mirrors how SharePoint should evolve in enterprises today.

Intro to SharePoint 2010 Development: How to Build and Deploy a Web Part (XML Journal)
If you are already familiar with SharePoint 2010, you already know how easy it is to build and deploy a web part now.  However, this post is for those that don’t keep up with SharePoint as some of us do and may not realize how the development experience has improved so much.  My post How to Build and Deploy a Web Part is by far the most popular post on DotNetMafia.com.  I wanted to make today’s post just as a point to show you how much less work is involved in deploying a web part.  I am going to group this post into sections in a similar manner as I did the post for the WSS3 post.

Has Microsoft Outdone the iPhone with Windows Phone 7 Series? (iTWire)
Microsoft has finally launched its long awaited Windows Mobile 7 Series operating system, promising a unified interface no matter which telco you buy your phone from, a totally fresh new user interface with graphical pizzazz and wow, Zune and Xbox Live integration and more – but we still don’t know if there’s “true” multitasking.

Microsoft Revamps Mobile Strategy with Windows Phone 7 (Redmond Developer news)
Looking to defy critics who say that its days are numbered in the rapidly growing smart phone market, Microsoft today launched an ambitious new mobile platform that is a major departure from its existing Windows Mobile offering. CEO Steve Ballmer outlined Microsoft's forthcoming Windows Phone 7 Series at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. The new platform effectively scraps Windows Mobile 6.x with a completely revamped user interface (incorporating components of its Zune UI) and more tightly defined integration with devices and networks.

Google Buzz vs. Outlook 2010 Social Connectors (PCWorld)
Google jumped in to the deep end of social networking with the launch of Google Buzz. The concept of integrating social networking with the traditional e-mail messaging platform is not a unique Google innovation, though. Microsoft has its own approach to combining messaging and social networking with social connectors for the upcoming Outlook 2010.

Google Admits Buzz Social Network Testing Flaws (BBC News)
Google has admitted to BBC News that testing of its controversial social network Buzz was insufficient. The firm has had to make a series of changes to the service after a ferocious backlash from users concerned about intrusions of privacy. The BBC understands that Buzz was only tested internally and bypassed more extensive trials with external testers - used for many other Google services.

Enabling a Button on the Ribbon Based on Selection (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
A lot of people have asked me how to create a button which enables if and only if a single item is selected. This isn’t something we have out of the box, but the code to get this functionality is pretty simple. I’m going to assume that you’re generally familiar with SharePoint, CustomActions, and customizing the Ribbon – if that’s not the case, you’d probably be better off researching those things before delving into this.

Empower Your Users of Access 2010 Database Applications with Access Services! (To the SharePoint)
For years Microsoft Access has allowed organizations, individual departments, and users to manage their business information. It enables them to easily create and deploy database applications that address a specific business need, task, or process.

Introducing Records Management in SharePoint 2010 (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
Hi everyone.  My name is Adam Harmetz and I work on the engineering team responsible for the SharePoint document and records management vision and features.  Many of you might remember me from the SharePoint 2007 recman blog.  The recman blog was a great way for the team to connect with records managers, IT professionals, and information architects and we'll be continuing that discussion for the SharePoint 2010 compliance features via the Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog.

Surfacing Business Data in Word 2010 Using External Data Columns and the External Item Content Control (Microsoft Business Connectivity Services Team Blog)
Another post for BCS… this is Juan Balmori, I’ve being working in the SharePoint 2010 release on how to simplify customers lives by using data from external systems in Office client applications such as Word and Outlook. This time I am going to focus on how to pump business data into Word 2010. In order to be successful here you’ll need to understand the concept of External Data Columns (aka EDCs) and content controls.

Groundhog Day: Configuring Back Connection Host Names Using Group Policy (harbar.net)
Quite some time ago I posted coverage of the DisableLoopbackCheck registry key and how it impacts SharePoint. It’s amazing just how often this comes up on the Interwebz. Scarily the common advice given is to turn this feature off. And that’s bad advice. In my original post I detailed why. In a nutshell: OK in test/dev, NOT OK in Production.  Yesterday my buddy Bob Fox posted a follow up, DisableLoopBackCheck? Let’s do it the right way. His post details how to configure a list of names which won’t be checked.

SharePoint 2010 Mobile Experience Drill Down ( SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
With all the excitement of Windows Phone 7 series, many are asking the questions… Should I have waited? (Release planned for the Holidays - Nov/Dec 2010)  Does SharePoint 2010 have a mobile story?  Is that story any better than 2007?  Is anyone really using mobile to access SharePoint anyway?  The iPhone today has a pretty decent full fidelity experience against SharePoint 2007, and the experience gets better in 2010.  With WinMo 6.5 using SharePoint was a pretty rough proposition, and trying to use it to post blogs was a no starter.  This experience for WinMo 6.5 changes, and all releasing mobile apps support 6.5, but the interface and resolution alone takes a multi generational jump into the future with Windows Phone 7 series.

SharePoint Large File Upload Configuration (SharePoint Comic)
Several times I have had SharePoint environments where there was a need for large file storage (I mean large files, 100MB+). SharePoint can accommodate, but you need to change a few settings in different parts of the overall system, or you'll run into errors and timeouts.  This is especially true when the file size is over 50MB.  Below are some steps to take in order to configure your environment.

Filter the Calendar Plus Web Part On-the-fly Using Multiple Values (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Are you using the Calendar Plus Web Part and want your end users to be able to filter the content on-the-fly? You can do that with the dynamic filter feature of the Calendar Plus Web Part that allows users to choose a view. This feature uses the filter saved with each selected list view to filter the data shown in the Calendar Plus. Jeff's post here gives you a few other options. But, maybe you want your users to choose what they want to filter with on-the-fly so you can't use the dynamic filter feature since you don't know ahead of time what they want to filter on. Well, let me tell you about another option.
