Google Buzz: Forget Twitter, Microsoft's SharePoint is a Bigger Target (ZDNet)
Google launched its new social Gmail experiment dubbed Buzz and the “Twitter killer” comments will be a dime a dozen. But from an enterprise perspective, Google Buzz has a far larger target in mind: Microsoft’s SharePoint. For sure, Google’s first mission is to take out Twitter. Buzz makes Gmail social. You can follow your contacts. And broadcast things like photos, video and location updates. Simply put, Google Buzz has the potential to usurp Twitter—there’s no 140 character limit—and all of the clients that go with Twitter.

Can Google Generate Buzz in the Enterprise? (PC World)
Google dove into the deep end of social networking this morning with the announcement of Google Buzz. In addition to providing a platform for users to share information, status updates, pictures, and videos with their social network, Google also wants enterprises to embrace Buzz as a business tool. Google Buzz is an ambitious project for Google, but then Google doesn't ever seem to take on projects that don't challenge established rules and paradigms. Google also seems to be on a quest to dominate every facet of technology, and not at all content to leave the lucrative and exploding social networking market to the likes of Facebook and Twitter.

Microsoft Drops Open-source Birthday Gift with FAST (The Register)
As birthdays go, it's not a bad present. Microsoft's decision to sacrifice FAST's Enterprise Search Platform (ESP) development on Linux and Unix for Windows potentially gives open-source search providers like Lucid Imagination a free pass. In announcing the news Monday, FAST chief technology officer Bjørn Olstad was clearly cognizant of the implications of the move. Olstad tried to preempt the potential customer hemorrhage with a standard commitment to interoperability with Linux and Unix and vague references to some "hosted solutions."

Microsoft Offers Visual Studio 2010 Release Candidate (InfoWorld)
Microsoft has taken another step toward releasing its Visual Studio 2010 IDE and the accompanying .Net Framework 4 programming platform, offering a release candidate (RC) for the paired technologies on Monday. The RC stage is considered the last step prior to a general release, with developers able to offer final feedback. Microsoft has scheduled the launch of Visual Studio 2010 and .Net Framework 4 for April 12, after having scrapped an initial March 22 launch date to work on performance issues found by beta testers.

10 Ways Windows 7 Will Beat Back the Mac OS X Challenge (eWeek)
News Analysis: Although Apple touts Mac OS X as a fine alternative to Windows, its chances of capturing major market share away from Microsoft's OS are getting smaller by the day. Windows 7 is enjoying major success. As a result Apple will find it is harder to make inroads among corporate PC users.

Microsoft Azure is Available, but Does Anyone Care? (InfoWorld)
I'm not sure if anybody noticed, but the long-awaited Microsoft Azure cloud computing platform went into billable production last week after a pretty short beta period by Microsoft standards. (I plan on digging a bit deeper into Azure this year.) However, I was taken slightly aback by the lack of fanfare.

Put Up Or Shut Up Time For Microsoft In Mobile (ChannelWeb)
At next week's Mobile World Congress event in Barcelona, Microsoft is expected to reveal its plan for resuscitating its ailing Windows Mobile business. It's hard to look at this event, and next month's MIX10 show, as anything other than crucial defining moments for the software giant as it tries to revitalize what was once a healthy business.

SharePoint’s Sasquatch Memory Leak (todd-carter.com)
I have been working with SharePoint for a few years now and have run into many nasty high memory or Out of Memory (OOM) issues. To date many of SharePoint’s memory problems have been discussed as problems with developers not using the Dispose pattern properly when using the SharePoint OM. And while I have found this to be the case I always had a feeling that there was something more, another larger leak which could not be explained simply by not calling Dispose. Sure not calling dispose will keep the SPRequest COM object (which is fairly large) around longer than necessary however ref-counting will clean these up eventually but even with using the correct coding patterns and practices the w3wp processes still seem larger than necessary; even on my development machine when I run stress against an out of the box installation. So there must be something else going on here; and so started my search for Big Foot.

Knowledge Management – Part 1 : Understanding the Knowledge Capital Model (Veronique's SharePoint)
One of the purposes of Knowledge Managers is to extract information from the heads of the key people using interviews and publish it to the rest if the company for the purposes of training, cross-skilling and continuity. To do this, you need to understand and make use of the Knowledge Capital Model, information auditing and knowledge mapping, conducting interviews, collation and analysis, knowledge harvesting, collaboration tools, content and document management and using the Internet.

If You Could Go to One SharePoint Conference this Year What Would it be? (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
I’ve seen and heard this question on twitter a couple of times now…  I don’t think it’s a simple question with a simple answer.  Definitely not tweetable.  SharePoint Conferences and events have exploded this past year.  Let’s break this down. (This is not exhaustive.  If I’m missing important events I’m sorry, put them in the comments and I’ll consider putting it in the body, but no guarantees.)
