Google Apps Turns 3 as It Fends Off Microsoft, IBM in the Cloud (eWeek)
Google finds itself in a daunting position on Feb. 22, the third birthday of Google Apps Premier Edition. The company is trying to dislodge legacy on-premises installations from Microsoft and IBM while fighting off SAAS solutions from those same companies. It also has to compete with new cloud offerings from Cisco Systems, as well as from a slew of startups such as Zoho, Mindtouch and others. But Google, Microsoft and IBM will be the main protagonists in the battle for pre-eminence in the market for cloud, or Web-based, collaboration software.

Now Microsoft, Yahoo Can Tag-Team Google (PCWorld)
Last week's decision by U.S. and European regulators to let Microsoft Corp. and Yahoo Inc. join their search businesses could significantly heat up competition in a business that in recent years has been dominated by Google Inc. "This could be a big change for the search industry," said Dan Olds, an analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group. "It combines the search efforts of two large players that both have a small search presence, but have a lot of resources and assets which they can devote to competing against Google.

Rivals Aim to Slow Mobile Gains by Apple, Google (Computerworld)
Three traditional powerhouses in computing and communications -- Microsoft Corp., Intel Corp. and Nokia Corp. -- last week kick-started major mobile technology revamps in the face of a quick-changing smartphone and device market increasingly dominated by Apple Inc. and Google Inc. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Intel and Nokia jointly announced the Linux-based MeeGo mobile operating system, and Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 7 Series (WP7).

Office, Bing, and Windows Live on the iPad? Naturally (Ars Technica)
Two weeks ago, when Apple announced the iPad, hundreds of software companies began to wonder whether they should start porting their applications to the device. Microsoft, the world's largest software maker and the second largest Mac developer in the world (Apple being the first), refused to comment on the iPad when we checked in with them. Despite contacting PR representatives responsible for different departments, the message was the same: "We can't comment on a device we haven't yet seen and have nothing additional to share at this time."

Nope, Windows 7 Is Not a Memory Hog (PCWorld)
There's been much ado about a report by Devil Mountain Software that the vast majority of Windows 7 systems suffer from RAM woes, leading to performance problems. Based on my own experience on a machine that has run Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP, though, it's simply not true. Computerworld reports that Devil Mountain Software claims that most Windows 7 systems max out on their memory, severely affecting performance. Gregg Keizer reports:

SharePoint 2010 Logging Database - An Administrators Best Friend (From The Field)
One of the features of SharePoint 2010 that is getting me really excited is the logging database. The purpose of this database (which is named WSS_Logging by default) is to aggregate logging information from the farm into one central location. As somebody who spends a lot of time in front of customers helping them to maintain a healthy and stable farm this feature will be a killer app in SharePoint 2010 for me, I’m sure that it will save me heaps of time.

What are You Deploying? If You Think it is SharePoint, You Got it Wrong! (Perspectives on SharePoint)
I have had many discussions with clients that tell me “I am implementing SharePoint” and ask my advice on how to best deploy SharePoint in their organization. I am going to argue they are not deploying SharePoint and I bet they don’t appreciate what they are really deploying. If they did, I think they would deploy it differently and questions about how to deploy would be easier to answer.

Adding Custom Actions to the Ribbon UI in SharePoint 2010 Using SharePoint Designer 2010 (End User SharePoint)
In my last article, Adding Custom Actions to the List Item Menu in SharePoint 2010 Using SharePoint Designer 2010, We walked through the process of adding custom actions to the List Item Menu using SharePoint Designer 2010, today, we’re going to have a look at the other Custom Action functionality available to us in SharePoint Designer 2010.
