Free Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010 VMs Available for Download (Softpedia)
Microsoft has added a new software package to its list of free product offerings designed to streamline the testing process of new technologies for early adopters. Put together by the SharePoint team, the 2010 Information Worker Demonstration Virtual Machine (Beta) is a set of Virtual Machines focused on Office 2010 and SharePoint 2010. Although the VMs bring to the table a range of technologies, fact is that the downloads are intended to simplify the evaluation and demonstration of the next iteration of Office and SharePoint. The downloads total no less than 13.5 GB, so customers looking to leverage resources should plan ahead.

Silverlight in SharePoint 2010 (Ajax World)
One misconception I have heard is that SharePoint 2010 is completely based on Silverlight.  While SharePoint does use Silverlight now in various places, I would say most of it is still based upon regular ASP.NET pages.  I haven’t seen anything that actually requires Silverlight yet, but it does make things prettier when you have it.  This is just a brief overview of some things you might see.  For example, one of my favorite new things is the Create page.  If you don’t have Silverlight installed, you get something that looks like this.

Oracle and SharePoint (CMS Watch)
Among the various categories of content technologies that we evaluate, Oracle has been very quiet over the past year. For the past two years, actually, Oracle has urged customers and partners to look forward to the "11g" series of upgrades across its various application sets. In certain cases, various 11g-labelled capabilities have been slipstreamed into existing versions, especially on the ECM and WCM side. But overall, the major 11g-branded upgrades have created enormous expectations among Oracle customers.

Another Example of Microsoft Surface Touch Operations with E*Sponder (Windows 7 News)
Microsoft and E*Sponder, a software development company that focuses on emergency management response, are working together to provide police agencies crowd and safety control. The E*Sponder Software, called  Mapping, works with Windows7 to leverage multi-touch capabilities to manipulate graphical maps and displays using hand gestures.

HP Slate: Pictures, Video of Device; CTO Talks Prototypes, Background (ZDNet)
Hewlett-Packard CTO Phil McKinney shows off the company’s upcoming Slate device in a new video, explaining the planning and production behind the device. Set for release sometime this year, the Slate originally began its life five years ago as an e-reader prototype. As technology advanced, the “rich media experience” became essential to the device’s mission, and only now has hardware (and price point) caught up with the company’s vision.

If You Know C#, You Know Windows Azure Storage (.Net Developers Journal)
I have been using Gladinet Cloud Desktop to manage files on the Azure Blob Storage for a while now. It has a drive letter, accessible from Windows Explorer and it works just like another network drive on my PC. However, just like when you are driving a car on a daily basis but sometimes still curious about what is under the hood and check the oil level on weekends, I am curious about how Azure Storage works.

Windows 7's XP Mode: What it is, How it Works, Who it's for (ars technica)
The bespoke line-of-business application is a common feature of the corporate world, and a thing that has been instrumental in cementing Windows as the corporate desktop OS standard. These applications—I've worked on a few myself—are typically crummy affairs. The foundation of such applications is typically some combination of Visual Basic 6 and obsolete versions of Access and Excel. On top of this mound of [redacted], these apps usually contain one or more third-party components to draw graphs or something, from vendors that have long since gone out of business.

Windows Mobile 7 Demo to Appear at Mobile World Congress 2010? (ZDNet)
While most of the world will be buzzing about Apple today (and for many weeks to come, depending on how good that iTablet or whatever actually is), there’s some small news over in Microsoft land. Actually, it's potentially big news: rumor has it that Windows Mobile 7 will demo at long last at the Mobile World Congress 2010 in Barcelona next month.

SharePoint: Through the Looking Glass (End User SharePoint)
Stephen Kim from the Microsoft Advertising Group has put together a video demo of a “proof of concept” SharePoint tool for monitoring social media input. This is a show-stopping application if it ever gets to market. The ability to combine disparate sets of internal data and integrate it through real-time dashboard analysis, while monitoring the community response through social media is mind boggling… plus, it all runs in SharePoint!

Where is the Save Button? (zevenseas)
As we were prepping for the demo that we held at the SharePoint Connections conference in Amsterdam last week about “Social Computing Overview'”, one of the things that we wanted to demo was the online collaboration bit. At first, we wanted to show Word 2010 client and the Word 2010 WebApp and the interaction between those two. But, as it turned out, you have to save every time you want to ‘share’ your part of the document to the other person. Then, just for the fun of it, I took a look at OneNote and in particular the OneNote WebApp..
