Central Desktop Aims to Undercut SharePoint (Small Business Computing)
Have you wanted the collaboration and content management features in the cloud that Microsoft's SharePoint Server provides but don't have a big company budget? Central Desktop says it has a solution for that. The company's newest product -- called Central Desktop for Office and available Monday -- aims to provide much of the functionality of Microsoft SharePoint without the cost or the maintenance overhead.

At 15, Microsoft's Internet Explorer at a Crossroads (CNET)
Thanks to corporate use and ties to Windows, Internet Explorer has remained dominant in the browser space ever since it won the first browser wars with Netscape a decade ago. However, by allowing the browser to stagnate after the release of Windows XP in 2001, Microsoft created an opening that paved the way for the rise of Firefox and, more recently, Google's Chrome.

Gartner: Customers Still Don't Get Cloud Computing (ZDNet)
Many corporate customers still do not grasp the key benefits of cloud computing, one top analyst says. In a research note posted today, Gartner distinguished analyst John Pescatore said many corporate customers he’s talked to recently who are evaluating cloud computing for the first time are not interested in “true” cloud benefits — that is, the offloading of compute and storage to infrastructure as a service — but rather they are looking at the technology as a means to secure the virtual data center.

JULY SEARCH SHARE: Google Loses, Yahoo Gains, Bing Hits Wall (SF Gate)
ComScore has adjusted its search methodology to mute the impact of automated searches, "hovers," and other gimmicks. The new numbers only measure "explicit" searches, in which a user types a term in a search window and clicks "search." The change in methodology didn't change the numbers much.

Windows Phone 7: Microsoft Reveals Launch Titles and More on Xbox Live Gaming (ZDNet)
Last month I had the chance to spend about three weeks with the Windows Phone 7 Technical Preview and it helped reignite my enthusiasm for Microsoft’s upcoming mobile platform. One of the major holes missing in the Technical Preview that I mentioned here was Xbox Live games and this was one area where Microsoft really has a chance to stand apart from the other platforms. Tonight we received a press release revealing much more about the Xbox Live gaming support, including revelation of the first large number of games that will be in the launch portfolio. Microsoft also promised weekly releases of games after launch so it looks like games may be the number one type of application available soon after launch on Windows Phone 7. The lucky guys over at Engadget actually had a chance to play some of the games on WP7 devices so check out their post and video for more information.

Enterprise 2.0 Features Won't Dictate Success (Technorati)
Enterprise 2.0 may appear on an ever increasing number of business plans, and a recent article on SharePoint gives a perspective on potential benefits, though this rush of web 2.0 features built into content management products will not be enough to deliver a thriving online community to an organisation. Offering employees activity feeds, tags, notes and other functions it is assumed that tangible organisational benefits will occur.

Your Pass To Good Government (Newsweek)
Had Franz Kafka been born in 21st-century Tallinn, Estonia, instead of 19th-century Prague, some of the gems of modernist literature might never have been written. Instead of the man from the country who spends years trying to get past an implacable gatekeeper in the short story “Before the Law,” all he’d need in Estonia is a government-issued electronic identity card. Then he could go online or stick the bar-coded ID into a card reader and, moments later, sign a contract with an international corporate partner, pay a traffic fine, and file his taxes. No lines, no bribes, no forms in triplicate, and no need to plead his case “with one doorkeeper after another, each more powerful than the last,” as in Kafka’s hellish vision. OK, so our bookshelves would be the poorer—but our lives are a hell of lot easier.

Why Me? Web Part Errors On New Web Applications (Clever Workarounds)
Oh man, it’s just not my week. After nailing a certificate issue yesterday that killed user profile provisioning, I get an even better one today! I’ve posted it here as a lesson on how not to troubleshoot this issue! The symptoms: I created a brand new web application on a SP2010 farm, and irrespective of the site collection I subsequently create, I get the dreaded error "Web Part Error: This page has encountered a critical error. Contact your system administrator if this problem persists" Below is a screenshot of a web app using the team site template. Not so good huh?

How to Staff Your SharePoint Project (PMP Insights)
Something that has been truly bothering me lately is recruiters or project managers or executives not knowing how to staff SharePoint Deployment projects or staff their Operations teams that support SharePoint.   Too often I receive calls from recruiters looking for SharePoint “Technical Resources”.  Rarely are they looking for people who know how to analyze business processes or manage enterprise information management platforms like SharePoint.    It seems recruiters want hands-on resources who write code and do everything else including administration and configuration.   Unfortunately looking for a jack of all technical trades is just not the best way to minimize risk when it comes to your enterprise application deployment.  I’ve seen too many implementations that have gone wrong or ended up simply re-creating the information mess that already existed in the organization.

Mindsharp SharePoint 2010 Power End User (Day 5): The Wrap-Up (SharePoint 2010)
Kay McClure, our Mindsharp instructor for the week, started the day by finishing up the rest of the Site Collection Administration settings, which we started looking at yesterday. This was our "extra credit" section, normally an Administrator-level class topic. A note to those readers who deal with compliance and regulatory issues: SharePoint 2010 has a lot to help you out, even document Hold features to keep the lawyers happy.
