SharePoint Alternatives: A Sample of Senseless Competitive Comparison (CIO)
You certainly know the first question a prospect asks when evaluating the opportunity to implement an intranet solution. It sounds like this: “How does your product perform compared to SharePoint?”. Or this: “Why is your product better than SharePoint?”. You see the trend – SharePoint is everywhere and, most frustratingly, people are missing the crucial point about both products!
Steve Ballmer has One More Chance to Save His Job (Beta News)
July 29, 2010 may be remembered as the most important day in Steve Ballmer's career at Microsoft. Tomorrow, the company hosts its annual Financial Analyst Meeting, or FAM. How much Ballmer and his core leadership team spend concretely talking about the future, rather than the past, will foreshadow how long the chief executive can remain the big boss. Nearly as important: Which executives will make presentations.
Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Beta Leak Is Real, Claims Source (Softpedia)
A few screenshots of what is reportedly the Beta development milestone of Internet Explorer 9 have emerged on a Chinese website recently. Softpedia readers that got a sneak peek at the alleged IE9 Beta screenshots yesterday were also able to read about my skepticism related to their validity. A representative of CNBeta contacted me since my article was published yesterday, claiming that the Internet Explorer 9 leak is indeed real, and that what customers are getting via the screenshots is an actual taste of IE9 Beta.
Microsoft Hosts Annual Financial Analyst Meeting (AP)
Analysts will be looking for clues about the future of Microsoft Corp.'s mobile and online businesses and its strategy for Windows-based tablet computers at an annual meeting with the software maker on Thursday. In a note to clients Tuesday, Caris & Co. analyst Sandeep Aggarwal said he hopes the software maker will lay out a road map for Windows tablets and discuss what impact the company thinks the category could have on the PC industry in the long term.
Can Microsoft's Phone 7 Cut a Slice Out of Apple? (Computer Weekly)
is turning its attention to the mobile market. Microsoft has been producing phone operating systems since 2002, but the devices never really shouted with the kind of "love is blind" desirability that Apple experiences. Microsoft did try introducing a smartphone in the US, but pulled the plug after just 10 weeks in the market, to make way for the Windows Phone 7 operating system.
The Cloud – Should You be "All In"? (Reseller News)
Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference is generally an accurate gauge of the issues that are top of mind for the channel. After all, there aren’t many parts of the technology sector the software giant doesn’t influence. Because the shift to cloud computing is currently the game-changing force in the software world, it was no surprise that the subject would dominate the partner conference this year.

Extending LINQ to SharePoint Entity Models for SharePoint Server 2010 or Custom Field Types (Andrew Connell)
The new support for LINQ in SharePoint 2010 makes it much easier to read and write data to/from SharePoint lists. The way it works is that you run a utility SPMETAL.EXE to generate the entity model that is used as the context for the queries. Quite helpful but it only includes the fields (the data types in SharePoint like “single line of text”) that are out-of-the-box in SharePoint Foundation 2010 (SPF2010).
Email Management in SharePoint 2010 #2: ECM for the Masses (Offline SharePoint)
In my first blog entry, I looked at the 4 key scenarios for email management in an organization and identified the key outcomes and supporting platforms and software for each scenario. In this next section, I would like to talk about content management from a Microsoft perspective, our notion of ECM for the masses, and how we think of delivering it from Microsoft.
VLE, Learning Gateway or Learning Platform? Guest blog post from SharePoint MVP Alex Pearce (SharePoint in Education)
As I have been working through this series I had contact from SharePoint MVP Alex Pearce who I have worked with for over three years. He works directly in education on Local Authority wide projects and has recently been writing about VLEs, Learning Gateway and Learning Platforms. As I was writing a series on SharePoint in Education he kindly offered to add his own thoughts based on his experience.
Performance Considerations for Managing Projects on SharePoint (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
From time to time we come across a situation where a customer has no real investment in SharePoint. When I say they have no real investment, I mean that someone sets up a SharePoint server – but it is not a formal part of IT – it is not strategic so to speak. We will often find that the customer will have the database and the SharePoint on the one server and it will be the minimum spec recommended by Microsoft. This is a great start as it allows the customer to dip their toe in the water. But six months later we will find that the server has two hundred users and over 500 hundred projects – yikes! Sometimes we even see the 500 projects rolling up to one dashboard. That small server was never meant for this load. As you might expect the first step is to see if the “size” of the server(s) is correct. Here are some self help getting started resources.

Debugging ECMAScript in SharePoint 2010 (The Bamboo Team Blog)
One of my favorite new features of SharePoint 2010 is the ECMAScript object model. OK, the .NET and Silverlight client object models are also neat but they don’t come close to the ECMAScript object model. And don’t even get me started on “Sandboxed solutions” - they are great but WHY would you use a sandboxed solution when you can do even more with client side scripting?

Microsoft Advisory Services Engagement Scenario - SharePoint Installation and Deployment (Microsoft Support)
Microsoft Advisory Services is an hourly fee-based, consultative support option that provides proactive support beyond your break-fix product maintenance needs. This is a remote, phone-based support option that includes working with the same technician for assistance with issues like product migration, code review, or new program development. This service is typically used for shorter engagements, and is designed for developers and IT professionals who do not require the traditional onsite consulting or sustained account management services that are available from other Microsoft support options. This article also provides some self-help resources for this scenario.
