Using Windows PowerShell to Manage SharePoint 2010 (WindowsITPro)
The release of SharePoint 2010 (both SharePoint Foundation and SharePoint Server) offers welcome support for Windows PowerShell. Of course it has always been technically possible to use PowerShell to manage SharePoint but that involved doing a lot of work yourself to call the .NET Framework and work directly with the SharePoint Object Model or Web Services. But now it’s official, and administrators get to use the power of PowerShell out of the box.
Microsoft's Cloud in a Box (Redmond Channel Partner)
Microsoft's cloud in a box is coming this fall. And while only the company's three largest partners and one customer will be the first to deploy the new Windows Azure Platform Appliance, the successful implementation of these systems could re-define how the channel and services providers deliver IT in the years to come. Launched at the recent Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference (WPC), the Windows Azure Platform Appliance was the flagship announcement of the annual gathering. Designed to be housed in pod-like portable datacenters, one stood prominently on the show floor as Microsoft execs crowed over what they see as the missing link in their cloud strategy.
Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Navigation on Steroids, from the UI to Tabs (Softpedia)
Counting the seconds remaining until the release of Internet Explorer 9 (IE9) Beta? You’re probably not alone, considering that there already have in excess of 2.5 million downloads of the browser when it was in developer preview mode, namely not really a full browser. Come September 15th, and the Beauty of the Web launch event in San Francisco, IE9 will take a major step in its evolution, and one that will bring with it major advances across the table, from modern web standards support, to enhanced performance, improved UX, etc.
Windows Phone 7 Performance Promising (InformationWeek)
For the early part of its life, Windows Mobile was one of the more powerful mobile platforms, yet it was never known as being the most spry. Microsoft set out to fix that with Windows Phone 7 and early indications are it has succeeded. I've said it many times before, the iPhone turned the smartphone world upside down and set new standards for performance, navigation and web browsing when it launched in 2007. It showed how well a smartphone could perform and it also showed that web browsing didn't have to be painful on a small screen. Microsoft tried to gain some ground with various iterations of Internet Explorer 6 on its 6.1 and 6.5 versions of Windows Mobile, but it never really came close to the iPhone.
What Is Microsoft Thinking? (Redmond Channel Partner)
At the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Microsoft aimed to explain to the channel what Microsoft being "all in" with the cloud might mean for partners. Later in July, Microsoft took a stab at explaining to Wall Street what being "all in" means for the Microsoft bottom line. Steve Ballmer, Kevin Turner, Craig Mundie and other Microsoft executives emphasized the cloud in their keynotes, but they all talked about a broader range of Microsoft initiatives. Tellingly, Chief Financial Officer Peter Klein focused the bulk of his remarks on the central question for investors: How will a company that gets revenues almost entirely from software sales make a future in the cloud?
Which Countries Have the Safest Web Access? (PCWorld)
Seven of the 10 safest countries in which to surf the Internet are in Africa, with Sierra Leone rated the safest, according to a study by the Internet security firm AVG. Researchers compiled a list of virus and malware attacks by country picked up by AVG security software, with data from more than 127 million computers in 144 countries to determine incidence rates of such attacks. Sierra Leone's average incident rate was one attack for every 692 Web surfers. The study was conducted the last week of July. (See also "Top Standalone Antivirus Software for 2010.")
Applying the Lessons of Enterprise 2.0 to Gov 2.0 (O'Reilly Radar)
Last year, MIT professor Andrew McAfee published a landmark book on the business use and impact of social software platforms titled Enterprise 2.0: New Collaborative Tools for Your Organization’s Toughest Challenges. The book is a collection of McAfee's research since the spring of 2006 when he coined the phrase Enterprise 2.0. Shorthand for enterprise social software, Enterprise 2.0 is the strategic integration of Web 2.0 technologies into an organization's intranet, extranet, and business processes. Those technologies, including wikis, blogs, prediction markets, social networks, microblogging, and RSS, have in turn been adopted by government agencies, a phenomenon that falls under the mantle of Gov 2.0. As the use of such technology has grown, Congress is now considering the risks and rewards of Web 2.0 for federal agencies.

Opening PDFs in SharePoint 2010 (AskSharePoint)
In SharePoint 2010, you may have noticed a bit of interesting behavior when trying to open a PDF file; we certainly did. In fact, I’m surprised more people have not come across this in their 2010 environments, or perhaps the users simply thought this was the appropriate behavior and didn’t want to inform IT. The issue is this: when you click on a PDF document to open it in your browser (or Adobe Reader) directly from SharePoint – it does not allow you to do this. As you will notice in the screenshot below, there is no “Open” button as there should be.
BPC10 Screencast: SharePoint as a Gov 2.0 Platform (Meet Dux)
SharePoint is a powerful platform that can provide various Government 2.0 solutions such as citizen empowerment, project transparency, inter-government agency collaboration and public reporting. At Best Practices Conference 2010, I discussed real-life case studies of how SharePoint was deployed and the benefits it provided to: - Washington DC Department of Transportation - DOD/VA Interagency Program Office - VA Beach City Public School System.
How to use PowerShell to set the Master Page in SharePoint 2010 (Todd Klindt's SharePoint Admin Blog)
A couple of months ago Randy Drisgill asked me if there was a way to use the mighty PowerShell to set a web's master page in SharePoint 2010. Not being a branding guy I hadn't tried it before. Heck, I'm not even sure what a master page is, but for Randy I dug into it.
Save Site As Template + Import SharePoint Solution Package == Love (Elumenotion)
Say you're working on a new solution that requires certain elements like fields, content types, and list instances to provide data to a Web Part or some other custom functionality. In this post I'll show you how to create features to provision all of those elements in only a few minutes. Consider the list shown below. It's based on the Links list and is bound to a content type named Fun Link. Note that this could just as easily be based on the Custom List template.

BPC 2010: Dux Raymond Sy on 'SharePoint as a Gov 2.0 Platform' (The Bamboo Team Blog)
On Thursday morning at the BPC, Dux Raymond Sy presented a session on a relatively new topic both for him and for many of us in "SharePoint World": Gov 2.0 and how SharePoint is being leveraged as the platform to provide Gov 2.0 solutions to empower citizens, and to provide project transparency and collaboration between agencies and citizens. This topic is of special interest to me, as I focus on the Federal Sector Sales at Bamboo Solutions and was looking forward to learning more about how the SharePoint platform is becoming a part of the Gov 2.0 landscape.

After sharing the perspectives of, and arguments for (VP of Marketing) and against (CIO) social media in the enterprise, Christian discussed why SharePoint needs social.
