A Simple Way to Programmatically Create SharePoint Security Groups (XML Journal)
When it comes to SharePoint deployments, I try to automate everything I can.  I don’t like manual steps especially when it comes to setting up security.  A common task when deploying any sites is setting up security in some manner.  Today I am going to cover how to easily store definitions your SharePoint security groups in an XML file.  We’ll use LINQ to XML to make reading the file a breeze, and then we’ll use the SharePoint object model to create the groups and add users (or AD groups).   I’ve blogged on how to create a group before, but we’re going to take this a step further by giving you code that you can easily add to a feature receiver or console application.  First let’s take a look at the XML file we’re going to use.

Windows 7 Speculation Claims SP1 will Land in Q4 2010 (The Register)
Microsoft has pulled the release of Windows 7 Service Pack 1 forward to the final quarter of this year, according to a speculative report. The company hasn't officially announced when it plans to squirt out SP1 for its current operating system, but that hasn't stopped the rumours from swirling around the interwebs.

Microsoft to Rally Partners to the Cloud (Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine)
Microsoft's highest ranking partner executive on Wednesday plans to outline the company's cloud vision and what it means to Microsoft's partner ecosystem. Allison Watson, corporate vice president of Microsoft's worldwide partner group, will hold a Webcast on March 10 on the topic at the Microsoft partner portal here. The talk will air at 11:00 a.m. Pacific Standard Time (2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time) and will be available for replay.

Oh the Horror! Why is Microsoft Pushing the Hated Windows Ribbon for Office:Mac? (ZDNet)
Last month, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced Office:Mac 2011 and posted some screen shots of its future user interface. I finally got around to looking at them. Sorry to say, the productivity-killing Ribbon introduced with Office 2007 on Windows will make its way to the Mac. Sigh. But the silver lining is that we will get to keep our menus.

Search Administration Link Generates Unexpected Error (From The Field)
I ran into a problem with the Search Administration link whilst working with a customer the other day. They had successfully upgraded their MOSS 2007 environment from SP1 to SP2 – or so they thought! Service pack 2 for MOSS 2007 contains a large number of fixes and some UI changes, one of these is a flashy new dashboard that can be used to manage search. This is accessed using the “Search Administration” link that can be found within the Shared Service Provider (SSP) Administration site.
