ECM for the Masses: How SharePoint 2010 Delivers On The Promise (CMS Wire)
Enterprise Content Management (ECM) has been a buzzword floating in the enterprise. Yet its promise of integrating proven methods and tools to capture, manage and deliver relevant information to an organization has yet to be realized. Microsoft unveiled SharePoint 2010 yesterday at the SharePoint Conference 2009 in Las Vegas and its enhanced ECM capabilities look very promising.

SharePoint 2010: A Guide to the Many Versions (CIO)
On Monday, Microsoft announced that the beta version of SharePoint 2010 would be available in November and the final code would ship in the first half of 2010. In true Microsoft form, this means Redmond will have a whole bunch of confusing editions. Eight have so far been revealed which is more than the list of editions on Microsoft's public SharePoint 2010 website. Microsoft on Monday revealed two new cloud versions.

Meet the Father of Microsoft SharePoint: Jeff Teper (ZDNet)
At Microsoft, a number of products are associated closely with the managers who run the teams behind them. (Exhibit A: Dave Cutler, the prevailing mastermind behind Windows NT and more recently, Windows Azure.) SharePoint is no exception. But its “father,” Corporate Vice President of Microsoft’s Office Business Platform Jeff Teper, isn’t a household name (at least outside of Redmond).

SharePoint Social Features May Be Sufficient for the Enterprise User (Read Write Enterprise)
At the end of his keynote on Monday at SharePoint 2009, an interviewer asked Steve Ballmer about social computing. Ballmer recounted a story about a friend of his, a CEO for a Fortune 50 company. He said the guy is adamant in his opposition to social computing in his company. But if he had assurances that corporate data would be safe, then it might be a different story.

Can Microsoft Turn SharePoint into a Web Player? (InfoWorld)
Microsoft Corp. plans to bolster SharePoint's Internet capabilities in the hopes of penetrating a Web content management market that it has, so far, been largely locked out of. Microsoft is also creating two new versions of SharePoint 2010 aimed at Webmasters. These new offerings -- one, an on-premises server for small to medium-sized companies, the other, a Web version hosted in Microsoft's data centers -- will cost half the price of existing versions, according to Kirk Hoenigsberger, general manager of SharePoint. He declined to release exact prices.

SharePoint 2010 Vegas First Impressions (ZDNet)
Trying to write a blogpost about the SharePoint 2010 announcements today here in Las Vegas is like trying to summarize Microsoft in a few paragraphs. SharePoint, the fastest growing product in the company’s history, is also arguably the heir to the post billg empire. As foundational to the future of Microsoft as Windows, SharePoint is essentially a business processes ‘operating system’ that will work on or offline and aims to underpin all aspects of future business.

Microsoft Plays Its Strongest Office 2010 Card: SharePoint (Windows IT Pro)
With Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 launching this week and Exchange 2010 hitting general availability on November 9, you may think I'd be a bit preoccupied. OK, well, there's actually some truth to that. But Microsoft is launching some other important software in the weeks and months ahead, and in my mind, this coming generation of platforms isn't complete without it. I'm referring to Office 2010, which doesn't include just new versions of the age-old desktop software, but also web versions of some of those applications and a major new revision to SharePoint.

Ballmer: Users Won't be Penalized for Switching From Premise to Hosted Software (NetworkWorld)
Microsoft's licensing of internal versions of software vs. their online counterparts won't penalize users for buying on-premises licenses and then switching to online hosted software, according to CEO Steve Ballmer. Ballmer says Sidekick episode 'not good,' but Microsoft ensuring that its online services won't make the same error. Ballmer, in a meeting with Network World at the annual SharePoint Conference, said moving between enterprise applications like SharePoint and Exchange deployed internally to versions of that software operated in the cloud by Microsoft will be "seamless."

Ballmer Calls SharePoint the 'Center' of Microsoft's Innovation (eWeek)
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer used the platform of his keynote address at the Microsoft SharePoint Conference in Vegas to stress how SharePoint Server 2010 will embrace the cloud and streamline enterprise search for increasingly massive corporations. Both SharePoint Server 2010 and Office 2010 are embracing the cloud, as Microsoft seeks to shift its strategy from primarily desktop-based to one where its products and platforms live increasingly online.

Around the Blogosphere
SharePoint Conference Keynotes (Arpan Shah's Blog)
If you didn’t get a chance to come to the SharePoint Conference and watch the keynotes, you can watch them now! Steve Ballmer kicked off the conference with a dynamic keynote:

SharePoint 2010 Enterprise Content Management (Eli Robillard's World of Blog.)
There are three scenarios or scopes that the team designed for - the library, the document repository and then large scale repositories. The third isn't covered specifically here, but it's basically an architectural strategy that uses many components  (e.g. Content Organizer and FAST) to manage millions of files across sites. Other highlights are described in sections below.

SharePoint 2010 What’s New – Ratings (Fear and Loathing)
SharePoint 2010 offers a new feature around rating content. Note that this feature is only available in SharePoint Server 2010 and not available in Windows SharePoint Services 4.0 SharePoint Foundation 2010 (yeah, I can’t keep up with the name changes either).

SharePoint 2010: SSP is Dead, Long Live Service Applications! (Serge van den Oever [Macaw])
Notes from the SharePoint Conference 2009 session "Introduction to Service Applications and Topology". This is my personal interpretation of what has been said during the presentation. Don't shoot me if I interpreted something wrong.  In SharePoint 2010 Shared Service Providers (SSP's) are replaced by Service Applications. Services are no longer combined into a SSP. Services are running independent as a service application.

SharePoint 2010: Magical Solution with New Organizational Challenges (Network World)
In his keynote speech at the SharePoint 2009 Conference, taking place right now in Las Vegas, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called SharePoint "magical."  The upcoming SharePoint 2010 release is certainly that - but it's also overwhelming.  There are incredible improvements for SharePoint developers and end users alike, but there are also new opportunities to lose focus along the way towards building useful collaboration solutions.

Around Bamboo Nation
Bamboo + IMPACT Management = SharePoint Miracles (The Bamboo Team Blog)
There’s a big story brewing at Bamboo.  We are in the process of finalizing a large in kind donation of software and services to the American Red Cross.  I can’t wait to share the details about what we’ve been doing with the Red Cross and how this donation will help save lives and facilitate disaster relief efforts around the world. But with all of the preparation leading up to SharePoint Conference 2009, and then the travel from DC to Las Vegas, I haven’t had the time to give this story the full treatment it deserves.

Guest Blog by AppAssure Software's Joshua Hoffman - Simplify SharePoint Backup and Recovery (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Backups are boring. In most organizations, oversight of backups is a tedious job of managing media, verifying operations, and waiting for something to happen. Like I said – boring. That is, right up until the moment your CEO accidentally deletes a file he needs. Or right up until that presentation you need to give in two hours won’t open because the file is corrupt. All of the sudden, backup is not so boring. Backup just became very important.

SPC: SharePoint Sites - What's New & Improved in 2010 (SharePoint 2010)
Laura Brown, Product Manager for SharePoint, was the speaker for the SharePoint Sites: What's New & Improved session this morning at the SPC, and after just a couple of slides, she cut to the chase and dived straight into her demo.  A high level overview, Laura's tour of sites included examples of an intranet site, a Profile site (analogous with 2007's My Site), an Internet site, a team site, and touched on a number of related features.

A Glimpse Into the Goings On in the Bamboo Booth at the SPC (The Bamboo Team Blog)
As regular readers have probably gathered, my primary role when attending SharePoint conferences is providing coverage of sessions by documenting and sharing that information with Bamboo Nation.  One rather unfortunate side-effect of such a responsibility is that I'm rarely able to spend time in our booth meeting customers and/or fielding questions from attendees who may be unfamiliar with Bamboo.  So it was with no small amount of glee that I responded "no problem!" to a text message from a colleague summoning me to help out at the booth for a couple of hours earlier today.

SPC: Huey Lewis & the News Attest that it's 'Hip to be Square' at the SharePoint '80s Beach Party (The Bamboo Team Blog)
And now for something completely different... Though I've done plenty of it in my personal life over the last few years, I never would've thought that I'd find myself in a position to do any music blogging for Bamboo Nation.  That all changed when Tom Rizzo announced during Monday morning's keynote here at the SPC that Huey Lewis & the News would be performing at Tuesday night's '80s themed Beach Party.  At that point, I knew that not only would I be flexing my music blogging muscles here, but that I would ostensibly get to do so under the auspices of SharePoint ... and that I would utterly relish doing so.
