CES: Live-blogging Steve Ballmer (CNET)
CES 2010 formally kicks off Wednesday night with a keynote address by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer that starts at 6:30 p.m. PT. Ballmer is expected to play up the high points of Windows 7 and to talk about other topics near and dear to Microsoft, ranging from its game technology to touch-screen interfaces. I'll be bringing you details from the keynote speech and offering commentary on what Ballmer and Microsoft are up to as the presentation commences.
Microsoft Shows HP Tablet, Dates 'Project Natal' (PC Magazine)
After a brief power outage stalled its presentation, Microsoft on Wednesday unveiled a Hewlett-Packard branded tablet, and announced that its Project Natal project for the Xbox 360 game console will be available this holiday season. After a busy 2009, which saw the debut of Bing, the Zune HD, and Windows 7, the software giant's annual CES keynote was rather low-key. In addition to the HP slate and Project Natal, Microsoft really only discussed several new games for the Xbox and announced version 2.0 of its Mediaroom Internet-based TV platform.
Windows Azure: Microsoft's Big Bet (Channel Web)
Windows 7 has put the swagger back into Microsoft (NSDQ:MSFT)'s stride. But with Windows Azure, the cloud computing platform that will debut as a paid service on Feb. 1, Microsoft faces a new type of challenge: showing the industry that its deep software expertise can translate into success in the Wild West frontier of cloud computing. Microsoft, which has spent more than $1 billion to build gigantic data centers to run Azure, faces formidable competition from companies like Google and Amazon that have already become synonymous with delivering services over the Internet. In addition, startups are cropping up left and right to grab their piece of the cloud computing pie. All of which suggests that Microsoft will have to get paying customers onto the Azure platform as quickly as possible to stake its own claim in the cloud.
10 Reasons to Use Azure for Your Cloud Apps (Tech Republic)
Many technology experts believe that 2010 will usher in a new era in computing. In the beginning of PC computing, all applications were run from (and data was stored on) each individual system’s local hard drive. As time went on, companies recognized the benefits of centralized management and control and moved to a model where data is stored on, and many apps are run from, servers on the local network. The next step will move apps and data storage even farther away from the end user, into the “cloud,” with everything residing on remote servers accessed via the Internet. This will allow users to access those programs and data anywhere, from any Internet-connected machine, including low-powered (and low-cost) netbooks.
LG Confirms Windows Mobile 7 Devices Due this Year (Neowin)
During a press conference held at the Consumer Electronics Show today, LG confirmed they will be bringing Windows Mobile 7 powered devices to market this year. Interestingly the phrase "late this year" was not used but simply "this year". LG also confirmed it has two smartphones it will be launching tomorrow at CES. In early December 2009 Microsoft rep Phil Moore confirmed that we won't see Windows Mobile 7 phones on the market until late 2010.
Why IE Will Lose Market Share in 2010 (PC World)
There was a time when Microsoft ruled the Web, when its Internet Explorer (IE) browser enjoyed a supremacy only exceeded by its Windows operating system. That was no coincidence, of course: IE has been bundled with Windows since 1995. But the days of IE owning a 95% share of the browser market are long gone, assaulted first by the appearance, and then success, of Mozilla's open-source Firefox, followed by a resurgence of Apple's Safari on the back of gains in Mac share, the efforts of a small Norwegian developer, and the entry last year by Google into the fray.
CES Preview: Tablet PCs, Smartbooks Take Spotlight (InformationWeek)
This year's International Consumer Electronics Show, which opens in Las Vegas, Nev., Thursday, is shaping up to be less of what's brand new in the industry and more about new twists on technology still struggling for the limelight. Evolutionary technology to be highlighted includes an emerging class of mobile devices called smartbooks, tablet PCs, and 3D television, each of which is expected to be in sharp focus at CES. While the product categories are not exactly new, vendors are still trying to win the hearts and wallets of consumers.
