Microsoft SharePoint Best Practices Begin with Governance, Experts Say (SearchManufacturingERP)
Companies that want to implement Microsoft SharePoint collaboration should first have detailed governance and development plans in place, according to several analysts, manufacturers and integrators who have implemented the Web content management and collaboration software. They offered their Microsoft SharePoint best practices and tips. Such expertise can’t come fast enough for manufacturing IT departments, many of which face a desperate game of catch-up as demand for SharePoint rises, according to Tim Hickernell, lead analyst at Info-Tech Research Group Inc., based in London, Ontario.

Microsoft Set to Show Off Windows for Tablets Next Week (PCWorld)
Microsoft may essentially have been first to the market with the modern tablet computer, but Redmond has seen any advantage there erased by a failure on the software side. Windows just isn't meant for the touchscreen world. No doubt the company is eager to change that, and is said to be set to debut its tablet operating system shortly, sources say.

Microsoft's Biggest Mobile Money-maker is Android, Not Windows Phone 7 (ComputerWorld)
Microsoft may be spending enormous amount of money and development effort on Windows Phone 7, but for now, it's making more money off of Android than it is from Windows Phone 7. So says Citi analyst Walter Pritchard in a just-released report. Gizmodo says that according to Pritchard's report, Microsoft gets five times as much money from Android than it does from Windows Phone 7, because of a settlement in an intellectual property infringement case against HTC. The terms of the settlement call for HTC to pay $5 to Microsoft for every Android device HTC sells. Citi claims that HTC has sold 30 million Android smartphones, and so Microsoft has taken in $150 million so far as a result of the suit.

Microsoft CEO Ballmer: Should He Step Down? (eWeek)
Should Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer be shown the door? Greenlight Capital hedge-fund manager David Einhorn thinks so. “His continued presence is the biggest overhang on Microsoft’s stock,” he told a recent New York investment-research conference, according to Reuters. He also suggested it was time to “give someone else a chance” at the technology giant’s helm.

The news just keeps getting worse and worse for Sony. Now, it’s Sony Music and Sony Erickson that’s being hacked. This after weeks of PlayStation Network downtime and an expansion of bad news into Sony Online (well, offline these days) Entertainment. The news isn’t just limited to Sony and it’s not just about hacking attacks. There have been cloud failures at Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and more.

SharePoint is Like a Very Complex Swing Set Kit, but Without the Assembly Instructions and Picture (SharePoint Solutions Team Blog)
I just finished teaching our Exploring SharePoint 2010 and Upgrading from SharePoint 2007 to SharePoint 2010 classes this week in Nashville.  I’ve been teaching these classes around the U.S. on a monthly basis for the last year and a half.  It’s Friday afternoon and my students have headed home and I am reflecting on how much information we covered and how much they learned.  I think it was a great week for them.

SharePoint 2010 Document Center: Send Reminder Prior to Date on Documents without Code (EndUserSharePoint)
Let's talk about the problem first. For this specific problem, I have a 'policies and procedure' site that I have created, and policies need to be reviewed based on a date specified in each policy, and certain groups have to be notified 90 days prior to that date. The Review date for these policies is not known as circumstances may require it to be early, late, or skipped. The Target Review Date is also unknown as there is no policy defining a single Target Review date. It is basically unique in calculation and value for each document. There is also no defined approval process as there are many processes and many exceptions to those processes. Basically I had to create this document library to follow very manual steps in order to account for the various scenarios that are required.

I've got Georgia (Plus SharePoint, BI, and Scenarios) on My Mind ... (To the SharePoint)
It's Tuesday here in Atlanta and I wanted to give you a brief recap of the conversations I've had with customers here at TechEd 2011. I talked with close to 30 people yesterday on the subjects of SharePoint, Business Intelligence, and what the word "scenario" meant to them.

SPTechCon Returns to Boston Next Week: A Sneak Preview of Our Session Coverage (The Bamboo Team Blog)
I'll be packing my bags for Boston and SPTechCon on Wednesday, and what with the Memorial Day holiday on Monday here in the U.S., I figured I'd better start winnowing down my SPTechCon schedule sooner than later.  And so, having now taken a closer look at the typically outstanding lineup of sessions and speakers, here are some of the technical classes that I'm currently considering attending / covering next week:

'The list cannot be displayed in Datasheet view...' Message when Attempting to Edit in Datasheet in SharePoint 2010 (SharePoint Blank)
Anybody else out there ever run into this?  I have no idea how prevalent the issue is, or if it was just a fluke in my case but, shortly after getting a new laptop, I discovered that I was no longer able to edit lists in Datasheet mode on Bamboo's SharePoint 2010 portal.  When I clicked the Edit in Datasheet button on the Ribbon, this was the response I got:

This article describes how to use personalization site links to customize the top link bar on My Sites for users in your organization. When you add a personalization site link, it appears on all the My Sites in the site collection. You can create personalization site links to display important company information. For instance, your organization might want to give users quick access to a timesheet. The destination of the link can be a site within the company intranet or an external site on the Internet.
