PPM Software vs. SharePoint: Myths and User-vendor Disconnects (Search CIO)
Enterprise users who haven't already invested in project and portfolio management (PPM) software aren't in any hurry to do so, new SearchCIO.com research shows. They say it's either too expensive or doesn't address their biggest PPM pain points -- resource allocation and cost-benefit analysis. So, many are using Microsoft Project and SharePoint to manage their IT projects and portfolios.

Tax Concerns to Push Microsoft Azure Cloud Hosting Out of Washington State (ZDNet)
Microsoft is making preparations to move applications that developers are hosting on its Azure cloud infrastructure out of its Washington state datacenter, due to a change in the tax laws there. Microsoft warned customers testing their apps on the Azure test release about the planned change earlier this week. Microsoft is readying a migration tool to help testers with the move, company officials said.

Windows 7 Bug Likely Not a 'Showstopper' (CNET)
Microsoft said on Wednesday that it is looking into reports of a potential bug in the final version of Windows 7. However, Microsoft's top Windows executive said in a blog posting that the issue appears to be neither widespread, nor the "showstopper" that some are claiming it to be. The issue, noted on several enthusiast sites this week, involves a fairly arcane process used to check for problems in a particular disk. Under certain scenarios, the site suggested Windows 7 would siphon off all the available memory to perform the scan, potentially crashing the system.

Your Views: Microsoft's Browser Choice (IT Pro)
Bowing to EU pressure, Microsoft has announced plans to advertise competing browsers to its users, ditching plans to ship a European version of Windows 7 without Internet Explorer. The "browser ballot" will present a webpage to Internet Explorer users, showing them alternatives to Microsoft's own browser in the hopes of appeasing competition regulators at the European Commission.

Microsoft Offers Office 2010 File Format 'Ballot' to Stop EU Antitrust Probe (Computer World)
Microsoft will add a file format "ballot" to Office 2010, part of a wider move to fend off European Union (EU) antitrust regulators and block massive fines. In a proposal submitted to the European Commission two weeks ago, Microsoft spelled out a range of promises related to Office, its desktop and server software, and other products to address antitrust concerns first expressed by officials in January 2008.

GSA Tells Software Vendors to be Ready to Prove Security in the Cloud (Federal News Radio)
The General Services Administration wants vendors interested in providing applications through the cloud computing storefront to ensure their software is secure. GSA issued a special notice on FedBizOpps.gov July 30 that details the requirements for low- and moderate-risk systems.

USMC Bans Social Networking; Other Branches Unsure What to Do (Daily Tech)
USMC bans the use of popular social networking sites on all Marine-owned PCs and computer networks. As the world moves into a Web 2.0 social media world, the U.S. Marine Corps announced it banned the use of social networking websites on all Marine Corps-owned PCs and notebooks.

Google Acquisition Could Move HTML 5 Ahead (Technologizer)
Google’s $106.5 million acquisition of video technology maker On2 Technologies today could signal that it intends to make technology freely available for the next version of HTML, someday eliminating the need for plug-ins such as Flash for video playback on the Web.

Google Chrome Beta Shadows iGoogle with Drag and Drop, Themes (eWeek)
There is a new beta build for Google Chrome -- 3.0.195.4-- out today, featuring 30 percent faster processing and HTML5 functionality. I penned the details at eWEEK here. I just downloaded Chrome 3.0.195.4 and welcome the new features. Website thumbnails were previously static on the New Tab page, but there is now drag-and-drop functionality, enabling users to click a thumbnail and move it anywhere on the page.

Italian Car Maker, FERRARI, Forms Stronger Customer, Fan Connection with “SharePoint For Internet Sites” (Microsoft SharePoint Team Blog)
Ferrari wanted to make its Web site as state-of-the-art and captivating as the cars it manufactures. The company migrated from a Java-based infrastructure to Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007 to streamline development, simplify content management, and improve the user experience. With the new site, Ferrari has created a stronger audience connection. Site traffic has increased by 237 percent, with a 150  percent increase in unique visitors.

WOW! Office 2010 – Document Properties (Dotneteers)
In Office 2010, the menu for Office button is absolutely redesigned. For example, I’ve been working in PowerPoint 2010 lately, and experienced the following after clicking on the Office button:

A Video Example of Customizing/extending the SharePoint ‘Help Desk Template’ in SPD (Brain Litter)
This seemed worthy of sharing. Someone on Experts-Exchange asked about modifying/extending one of the SharePoint 40 Fantastic templates, to add their own column (Business Units) and then modify the 'New Request' form. So, here was my response to him/her including the related YouTube/Screencast video, showing how it is done. This should prove useful/valuable to anyone unfamiliar with making these kinds of changes or modifications using SharePoint Designer 2007 (now free, www.microsoft.com/spd).

The Office 2010 Synchronization Center (End User SharePoint)
As I play around with the Office 2010 client applications, naturally I’m finding some things are the same, while others are different. Today I’m going to talk about how Office 2010 saves files to a SharePoint site. Reminder: Because SharePoint 2010 is still "under wraps", I’m only talking about using Office 2010 to access a SharePoint 2007 (or WSS 3.0) site in this article. Interaction with SharePoint 2010 may be very different. Also, because this is still pre-release software, things are subject to change between now and future releases.

Installing a Language Pack for MOSS (red1'space)
The multi-lingual capabilities in MOSS are very cool. You can create sites in non-English languages simply by installing the appropriate language pack. This is especially slick when you are using variations (will cover this in another post). Note, the installation process is not very intuitive so I’ll provide details below.

Performance of Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2008 vs. Windows Server 2003 and SQL Server 2005 (SharePoint User Group UK)

Microsoft Updates
Search results randomly do not show the correct icons for Microsoft Office documents in SharePoint sites (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
When you run a search in a SharePoint site, the search results randomly do not show the correct icons for Microsoft Office documents or for user-defined document types in the Docicon.xml file. These documents are represented by the general HTML icon _layouts/images/html16.gif instead of the user-defined document type-specific icons. Running Iisreset.exe resolves the problem temporarily.

Create a survey (Windows SharePoint Services)
You can use surveys to ask team members what they think about issues, how to improve your processes, and many other topics. You can collect the results by using several different types of questions, such as multiple choice, fill-in fields, and even ratings.

Collaborating on shared projects (Windows SharePoint Services)
Working together successfully as a team is critical in today's workplace. Modern work teams often share important documents and tasks among employees both within the same office and in other parts of the world. This can create challenges — and sometimes, mistakes. Many teams have experienced the results of a poor team-collaboration effort: different versions of the same file circulating in e-mail or, perhaps, the wrong version of an important document sent out to a client.
