Office Web Apps Enter Limited Technical Preview (Ars Technica)
Microsoft is giving a limited number of testers access to Technical Preview versions of the Word Web App, the Excel Web App, and the PowerPoint Web App. A public beta is set to come out in a few months and the final version will arrive with Office 2010 in the first half of next year.

Microsoft Office 2010: A First Look at PowerPoint Web App (PC World)
Microsoft has kicked off the Technical Preview of Office Web Apps. I looked at the Office Web Apps version of Microsoft's PowerPoint presentation software to see how it stacks up to its more robust Microsoft Office desktop cousin. After logging in to my SkyDrive account and accessing My Documents, I started the Office Web Apps PowerPoint application by clicking New and selecting Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.

Why Bing Could Beat Google (PC World)
Microsoft's Bing is making some inroads as it continues to challenge the reigning search leader, Google. But Bing faces a long, steep road ahead if it's ever going to beat Google. Bing was the fastest growing search engine for the month of August, metrics firm Nielsen says. Bing expanded by 22.1 percent to claim 10.7 percent of the U.S. search market. Google also grew, by 2.6 percent to take a 64.6 percent market share, while Yahoo continued its decline shrinking by 4.2 percent to hold a total of 16 percent of all U.S.-based searches.

Google Praises Microsoft's HTML 5 Thoughts (PC World)
In a rare display of public goodwill between Google and Microsoft, the companies are bonding over Microsoft's decision to actively participate in the HTML 5 standards process. In a post to the The WHATWG Blog spotted by Ars Technica, Google's Mark Pilgrim, the company's leading HTML 5 evangelist, thanked Microsoft's Adrian Bateman for joining the conversation over HTML 5 development several weeks ago. "On August 7, 2009, Adrian Bateman did what no man or woman had ever done before: he gave substantive feedback on the current editor's draft of HTML5 on behalf of Microsoft. His feedback was detailed and well-reasoned, and it spawned much discussion," Pilgrim wrote.

Microsoft to Offer Cheap Windows 7 for Students (CNET)
Microsoft plans to offer a substantial discount for college students who want to pick up a copy of Windows 7. Starting October 1--and for a limited time--those in the U.K. will be able to preorder Windows 7 for 30 British pounds, according to a Microsoft Web site. In a Twitter posting, Microsoft said that U.S. college students will be able to get the software for $30, but the Web site it linked to does not yet have details on the offer.

Realizing Microsoft’s Potential in the Cloud (Venture Beat)
Cloud computing is democratizing the internet in the same way that personal computers democratized computing itself decades ago. With the greater efficiency and agility of the cloud, running internet-scale applications is now within the reach of any company. Just like the advent of the personal computer, the cloud is creating brand new opportunities and revolutionizing the way companies do business. Startups in particular are looking to the cloud as a way to get applications built and deployed faster, with no up-front costs.

Why Cloud Turbulence will Leave Users Unruffled (ZDNet)
Cloud computing may bring massive changes, but they will not necessarily be felt by developers or consumers of the technology, says Lori MacVittie. Much has been made of cloud computings imminent arrival, centre stage, in datacentres across the world. But despite its potential for cutting capital expenditure, the big switch to the cloud is largely an internal phenomenon. For consumers of applications, cloud computing changes nothing.

Office Web Apps Coming to Windows Live (Office Web Apps)
Today is an exciting day for us! We are making available Excel, Word and PowerPoint Web Apps for a select group of Windows Live users as part of the Office Web Apps Technical Preview. While the initial functionality is modest it will expand over time. As we get closer to the release of Office 2010 we will make the Office Web Apps available to more Windows Live users.

Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306 TechED NZ Session Notes (Chandima.Net Blog for SharePoint solutions)
Here is a detailed outline of what I discussed and presented at my TechEd session on Wednesday 16th September in Auckland – New Zealand titled Planning for SharePoint 2010 - Upgrade Planning and Guidance OFC306. Thanks to all of you who came along to the session. This is a first in a series of posts and White Papers that I will publish as part of an ongoing series on planning to upgrade to SharePoint Server 2010. Needless to say that I will only cover planning aspects and will NOT be talking about any new features or functionality of SharePoint 2010. Please visit the SharePoint team blog for details of SharePoint 2010.

5 Reasons Basic Install Also Known As Stand Alone Install Including Limited SQL Express For SharePoint Sucks! (SharePoint Joel's SharePoint Land)
There seems to be an assumption by some that Basic install is “Good enough.”  Some have followed guidance and “best practices” to avoid the basic install.  I know Shane Young (“a puppy dies every time a Basic install is done”), Todd Klindt (Just say no to Basic install), and I have all continued to preach that basic install on both WSS and SharePoint Server continues to be a poor decision.  Todd’s article goes into the step by step in avoiding that install type.  I say that basic install was written for the analyst, easy with few clicks, but those who fall in the trap of basic, will have a nightmare deployment when they find they need to troubleshoot or later move into a larger farm.

2009-09-17 Today in SharePoint with Joel Oleson (Recording) (End User SharePoint)
Joel is at the bottom of the world this week. I caught up with him in Singapore, we both ignored the 12 hour time difference and had a nice discussion about all things SharePoint. For those of you who follow this series, you might notice the name has changed from “This Week in SharePoint” to “Today in SharePoint”. I’m in the process of adding other people to talk to each week. Tomorrow I’ll be publishing the first of a set of weekly recordings with Michael Gannotti. The name “Today in SharePoint” seems to be more appropriate since my intention is to do a recording a day.

Avoid Newbie Mistakes: 10 Steps to Successful SharePoint Deployments (SharePoint Magazine)
A common word that keeps popping up around SharePoint deployments is “Governance,” as if it will help you avoid chaos and have a more successful deployment. The answer is, when executed properly, it can. Governance consists of rules and guidelines for designing a service offering. Its goals aren’t to shut down a deployment and make it take forever, but, rather, to find balance in user flexibility while providing for IT oversight. Here are 10 key steps to help you be successful in designing your SharePoint deployment.
