Employees aren't the only victims of Microsoft Corp.'s declining profits, as the company has killed, frozen or spun out 13 software and Web services since last fall, according to a report released Monday. Matt Rosoff, of the independent analyst firm, Directions on Microsoft, said more product cancellations are likely "as Microsoft continues to reduce costs."
Microsoft to Talk Sun-cloud Interoperability (The Register)
Microsoft is making its debut at Sun Microsystems' annual Java jamboree in what's looking like a mission of mutual support. The company will use its first ever JavaOne keynote speech Thursday to talk about the ability to use open-source infrastructure components built by Sun with Microsoft's nascent Azure cloud. Microsoft's come a long way in the last 10 years, having been at one time the subject of a Sun legal action for breaking compatibility on Java with its implementation.
Windows Azure Storage Evolves with New Features (Softpedia)
The addition of new features for Windows Azure Storage is the latest step in the evolution of Microsoft's Cloud operating system. Starting with the end of the past month, Azure testers can enjoy Entity Group Transactions for Windows Azure Table, Copy Blob for Windows Azure Blob, Get Block List for Windows Azure Blob and API Versioning. Brad Calder, Windows Azure Storage, explained that the new features introduced to Azure Storage were limited to the Windows Azure Storage REST interface and ADO.NET client library. However, the plan is to include the refreshes into a future version of the Azure software development kit.
Microsoft Will Offer Windows 7 Starter Edition Globally, Drop Three App Limit (Daily Tech)
Microsoft has announced that Windows 7 Starter edition will have features not previously found on starter editions of Windows XP and Windows Vista. According to Microsoft, previous starter versions of Windows only allowed users to run three programs simultaneously. The three program limit didn’t count background applications, wireless, Bluetooth, and system tools.

Myths About 2000-item Limits in Lists and Libraries (Mastering SharePoint Community)
I have had many discussions and written about this topic in the past and still receive questions about it. Microsoft does recommend you not have any more than 2000 items in any single list or library; however, this can be overcome by using simple techniques. Lists and libraries are stored in SQL so there really isn't a 2000 item limitation from that perspective. The limitation really is around the user interface and API access techniques. One has to think, even if you could display 10,000 items in a browser UI quickly and efficiently, how useful would that be to a user? When I have encountered situations where there are large number of items in a list or library, the customization is at the UI level to improve the user experience. In these situations, you may want to consider a search, or filter, interface that returns a maximum of 200 (or so) items.
jQuery for Everyone: Hourly Summary Web Part (End User SharePoint)
Well, after refining the problem statement, I put my owsapi to good use. The code below can be placed into a CEWP. You will need jQuery 1.3.1 as well as my owsapi code. Alter the paths to the scripts as needed in the first few lines of the code. Of course, the CSS styling can be improved on, but this screenshot will give you the basic idea.

Today marks the end of my Quick Launch customization series, and I'm afraid I must admit that I have planned poorly. On the one hand, I'm pleased that I'm wrapping up the series today, since I'll be out of the office attending a conference all of next week and won't be able to blog as a result. On the other hand, I thought that there was still so much to say about Quick Launch customization that it might take several additional columns to conclude ... and that's not really the case. As it turns out, all that's left to cover in order to complete the Quick Launch customization circuit entails covering ground that I've already essentially covered under other headings. Curiously, this mostly took place under the heading of, well, headings themselves!

Displaying SharePoint Lists in Web Parts (Microsoft Office Outlook)
When you create a built-in or custom list in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, Windows SharePoint Services creates a Web Part, a basic building block of a SharePoint site, to display that list. These Web Parts are called List View Web Parts. Windows SharePoint Services stores List View Web Parts in the site collection Web Part gallery. (The site collection Web Part gallery is the most central gallery of Web Parts for a work group. By default, the gallery name is the name of the site, such as "Our Team Site Web Part Gallery." )
