Top 5 Things You Can Do to Prepare for SharePoint 2010 (Windows IT Pro)
Significant excitement is building in the IT community as Microsoft prepares for the rollout of the latest version of its flagship collaboration and document management tool, SharePoint Server 2010. Many organizations have already deployed or are in the process of deploying the current version, Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, but want to ensure that they are prepared to upgrade their environment to SharePoint 2010 in the near future.

Office 2010 Public Beta to Begin Next Week? (Neowin)
Today, Microsoft sent out an email to Click-To-Run Technical Preview participants that outlined the public beta which was announced by Microsoft last month; next week an email will be sent out to give further details.

Microsoft's Top 3 Advances in Exchange Server 2010 (Beta News)
The biggest change to Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 was supposed to have been the introduction of something called Unified Communications -- the introduction of a singular console for the handling of all forms of digital communication, wrapping voice mail, instant messaging, and e-mail into a single delivery system. History may yet vindicate UC as the product's singular achievement.

Microsoft Sits on the Fence Over Cloud (ITPro)
Microsoft has claimed its strategy to not completely commit itself to cloud-based computing is the way forward. Speaking at the opening keynote of Microsoft’s Tech Ed event in Berlin, Germany, Robert Wahbe, corporate vice president of server and tools claimed that the software giant does not dictate to businesses what is best for them.

YouTube Gets (Unofficial) HTML 5 Support (bit-tech)
The first solid use for the HTML 5 video embedding functionality has finally appeared in the form of a front-end to YouTube which allows videos to be streamed without the need for Adobe's Flash Player. As reported by an anonymous SlashDot user, NeoSmart Technologies has gone live with a natty front-end to Google's popular video sharing site which streams the native MP4 - stored by YouTube for streaming to Apple's iPhone and iPod Touch platforms, which lack a native Flash player - via the video embedding functionality added to HTML 5.

Microsoft Comments on Windows 7 Beating Vista's Debut, Job Cuts (Daily Tech)
Microsoft seems well positioned for the future.  Its new Windows 7 operating system has been largely well-received by the press and public thanks to an unprecedented public testing program, which saw millions taking Windows 7 for a free spin.

SharePoint 2010 Platform Differentiation (Arpan Shah's Blog)
There are many vendors that claim to have an enterprise collaboration platform. So what differentiates SharePoint? Each vendor can defend their features, their interoperability investments and developer stack. So instead of focusing on specific features, I wanted to lay out what I think are three broad areas of differentiation for SharePoint vs. any other vendor platform out there:

SharePoint 2010 – Records Management (Shared Points for SharePoint)
SharePoint 2010 introduces new capabilities regarding Records Management. The most interesting feature, I think, is In-Place Records management (info at the end of this post) which makes it possible to declare documents as records without moving them to a Records Center. Records and documents live side by side in the site they were created in, and SharePoint 2010 makes it possible to apply different policies (i.e. retention schedules) depending if the item is a record or a document.

CMIS Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) – Public Review of Version 1.0 Begins (Microsoft Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Team Blog)
Around two-and-a-half years ago (at the AIIM conference in Philadelphia in May of 2006), my counterparts at IBM and EMC and I started discussing the need to form a group to create an open services standard for interacting with Enterprise Content Management systems (like SharePoint, IBM FileNet P8, EMC Documentum, etc.) in a uniform way. An earlier blog post explained the full rationale – but in short many customers and partners made it apparent that having to create one-off "connectors" between each application (like eDiscovery applications, Portals or Business Process Management systems) and ECM system was making it hard for customers to use more than one ECM system and for partners to build great applications that could "just work" with whatever systems a customer is using.

A Simple Way to Improve Your Estimating (and a Cool Pub Trick) – Part 1 (Clever Workarounds)
Okay I’ll admit it, I used to really suck as a time and effort estimator. I happen to have a business partner who is much better at it than me (hey Peter), and every time I sought a second opinion from him on my estimates, he would almost always make a much less optimistic assessment then me. Of course, Peter was almost always right too, dammit.
