What's Coming in SharePoint Server 2010 (Search Win IT)
For IT managers who lived through the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2003 to 2007 overhaul, the thought of migrating to the software's next iteration might be daunting. But one expert says they shouldn't worry so much. SharePoint Server 2010 undoubtedly will involve some technical changes -- Microsoft has said that it will be 64-bit only and require 64-bit Windows Server and SQL Server versions, for example – but it won't come with the architectural upheaval that 2007 did, said Susan Hanley, an independent consultant and author of Essential SharePoint 2007.

Could SharePoint Simply be 'Good Enough?' (Fierce Content Management)
At the EMC Writer's Conference last Friday in New York City, Bryant Duhon, an editor at AIIM's Infonomics magazine gave a presentation on Microsoft SharePoint. Many participants engaged in a lively discussion, which concluded that while SharePoint wasn't the best solution out there, "it is good enough" for most organizations' requirements.

Microsoft Readies Free Antivirus App (PC World)
Microsoft will soon launch a public beta version of its new free security software product for Windows 7, Vista, and XP Service Pack 3 customers. The antivirus program, which is code-named Morro, will replace Windows Live OneCare, Microsoft's retail security suite, which will be discontinued at the end of this month.

Exchange Server 2010 Beta Modular SDKs (Softpedia)
Microsoft has taken a new modular approach to delivering development technologies tailored to the next iteration of its Exchange Server offerings. As an integral part of the Office 2010 wave, the Redmond company released in mid-April the first public Beta of Exchange Server 2010. Following the release of the Beta build, the software giant offered the software development kit for the successor of Exchange Server 2008. However, while for past releases of Exchange Microsoft delivered a single SDK, for Exchange 2010 this is no longer the case. The Redmond company has produced no less than three SDKs, each tailored to its respective technology area of Exchange Server 2010.

The Economics of Cloud Computing (Ulitzer)
In the mid-nineties, new directions in managerial accounting made cost center bookkeeping popular in large organizations. In this model, departments within an organization traded almost like a miniature economy, with some departments earning a net gain for the company and some departments delivering a net loss.

Microsoft: Windows 7 Will Face 'Tough' Market (Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine)
Microsoft executive Bill Koefoed answered some questions about the software giant's business prospects on Wednesday at an investment firm-sponsored technology conference. Koefoed, who is Microsoft's general manager of investor relations, spoke at the RBC Capital Markets 2009 Technology, Media and Communications Conference in San Francisco. He was generally positive about Microsoft's business outlook -- especially with Windows 7 scheduled to ship on Oct. 22.

Alarm Sounded Over Wireless Keyboard Sniffer (Info World)
Security vendor Symantec is so concerned about the potential misuse of a new wireless keyboard sniffer it has put out a warning about the technology. 'Keykeriki' - a play on words derived from the Italian onomatopoeia for the sound made by a cockerel -is the work of the Remote-Exploit.org , a semi-commercial group that has been working on the open source project for nearly two years.

What do Snow Leopard, iPhone 3G S & its OS Mean for Business? (Computer World)
For about two hours on Monday, a big chunk of the technology world had its eyes focused on Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco. And even with CEO Steve Jobs out on medical leave, Apple's execs managed to wow the assembled crowd and the tech-centric folks watching from afar with a wave of hardware and software unveilings.

Bing..........ooooooooooo... (Silicon India)
Everybody including me, had first impression that Bing is a Search Engine, but it is not.. Microsoft last week unveiled its revamped search engine Bing. The Bing unveiling can surely be termed as one of the biggest Microsoft launches of the recent times considering the huge stakes it has in the company's success.

The ‘One Millionth’ English Word is ... (MSNBC)
A U.S.-based language monitoring group crowned Web 2.0 as the one millionth word or phrase in the English language on Wednesday, although other linguists slammed it as nonsense and a stunt. The Global Language Monitor, which uses a math formula to track the frequency of words and phrases in print and electronic media, said Web 2.0 appeared over 25,000 times in searches and was widely accepted, making it the legitimate, one millionth word.

Add PDF Result Type to MOSS 2007 Advanced Search (Workerthread Blog)
Originally this post was going to be a lot longer – the plan was to go into lots of detail about how to customise the SharePoint 2007 or Search Server Advanced Search page and extend the Result Type drop-down to allow selection of Acrobat PDF Files.  Then I saw this post over at Get the Point which contains links to several very good articles from Ben Curry and Bill English describing how to customise the SharePoint 2007 Search Centre.

Windows Rights Management Services, Microsoft SharePoint Products and Technologies, and Forest Boundaries (Bill Baer)
I recently was asked about the possibility of implementing Windows Rights Management Services with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 in a resource forest, or otherwise, the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 deployment was in a forest other than that where the users reside (login forest).  In this particular scenario, a one-way non-transitive trust was implemented, which provided an isolation boundary between the resource and login forest.

Twitter Basics (Eric Kraus' SharePoint/.NET Blog)
By now most of the world has at least heard of Twitter. For those who aren’t already using it, I imagine the vast majority have taken a stance of  “Why would anyone care when I go to the bathroom?”  Or, “Not another web site I need to sign up for…” Well, as an avid Twitter user, I couldn’t agree more.  However, there is a RIDUCULOUS amount of quality information out on Twitter to consume, information that doesn’t require you to create an account to retrieve.  Albeit, creating one will bring you added value…  The real tricks are finding the right people and filtering out all of the garbage.

Creating a SharePoint Document Workspace via Word 2007 (Part 1) (SharePoint Blank)
I've written previously about how to publish a SharePoint blog directly from Word 2007, and also about how to create a Document Workspace, so receiving the following question about creating a Document Workspace via Word 2007 struck me as a perfect opportunity to delve into another aspect of integration between Office apps and SharePoint: In Word 2007 there is a function where you can create document workspaces? How do I get access to a SharePoint site from a home computer where I can learn this feature and the document management task pane in Word 2007?

SharePoint Project Management to Fit Any Budget (The Bamboo Team Blog)
Ok, so you've been tasked with putting together a project management solution in SharePoint.  No problem, right?  But oh, by the way, it also has to be affordable since budgets have been cut.  And there's no money for training, so the solution also needs to be highly intuitive and easy to use.  Your staff isn't made up of a bunch of developers - so nothing requiring coding experience is going to work.  As if that weren't enough, there are also a few features that are absolute must haves:  color-coded calendars are one such requirement, and a method of visually displaying the status of tasks is another.   We know what you're probably thinking, but before you start to curse your boss's name - or begin looking for a ledge to jump off - let's take a look at what Bamboo has to offer.

Move the tables in an Access database to a SharePoint site and link to them (Microsoft Office Access)
If you have data in a Microsoft Office Access 2007 database, you can share it as lists on a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 site, where team members can interact with it. They can share and manage the content by using the features of a SharePoint site while they continue to use forms, reports, and queries from Access.

Master pages are a feature of ASP.NET 2.0; they work the same way in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and Office SharePoint Server 2007 as they do in ASP.NET 2.0. Using master pages, you can create a single page template and then use that template as the basis for multiple pages, instead of having to build each new page from scratch.
