SharePoint's Role In An ECM World (Integrated Solutions)
What is SharePoint’s role in an enterprise content management (ECM) world? Is SharePoint itself an ECM solution? Or, does SharePoint work with other ECM systems as simply a front end? The Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) (www.aiim.org) defines ECM as: “the strategies, methods, and tools used to capture, manage, store, preserve, and deliver content and documents related to organizational processes.” SharePoint on its own can do all of the above and with third-party applications, it can do all of the above very well. However, if we look at the Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) product page, Microsoft does not use the acronym ECM or mention any associations to ECM or related ideas. So, let’s forget whether SharePoint is an ECM system or not; SharePoint is what it is, and it shouldn’t be pigeonholed by other definitions.
Don't Hold Your Breath for 64-bit Visual Studio (Softpedia)
Microsoft won't follow the example set with Office 2010 with the next iteration of its development platform and tools, when it comes down to providing a 64-bit flavor of Visual Studio 2010 in addition to the existing, and traditional 32-bit variant. The Redmond company is sticking with a 32-bit exclusive strategy for Visual Studio, at least for the time being, even though it is well aware that 64-bit architectures are becoming mainstream. Rico Mariani, engineer at Microsoft, cited concerns related to both performance and cost as reasons that have prevented the software giant from producing an x64 variant of Visual Studio 2010.
Microsoft Executive: Business Adoption of Windows 7 to Start in 2010 (GCN)
Microsoft executive Bill Koefoed was upbeat when answering questions about the software giant's business prospects at a technology conference on June 10. Koefoed, who is Microsoft's general manager of investor relations, spoke at RBC Capital Markets’ 2009 Technology, Communications and Media Conference in San Francisco. He was generally positive about Microsoft's business outlook — especially with Windows 7 scheduled to ship on Oct. 22.
Is Microsoft Waking Up? (Kiplinger)
Has the sleeping giant in Microsoft finally awakened? Lots of folks seem to think so. S&P Analyst Jim Yin raised his rating on Microsoft to "buy" and his price target from $22 to $26. He cited strong coming demand for the new Windows 7 operating system as well as the apparent success of Bing, Microsoft's highly anticipated search engine that competes with Google and Yahoo.
Will Microsoft's Free Antivirus App be Worth the Price? (PC World)
Microsoft is getting ready to offer Windows users a free antivirus product (code name Morro), something it should have built into one of its operating systems a long time ago. But, of course, Microsoft never makes things simple. So the big question is will Morro be worth the price?
Microsoft's IE-Free Windows 7 Tries to Appease EU (eWeek)
Microsoft plans to release a European version of Windows 7 without Internet Explorer 8, called Windows 7 E, to appease EU regulators who say that inclusion of the browser could violate antitrust laws.
Who Wins, Loses with Browser-less Windows 7 (CNET)
Microsoft's move to offer Windows 7 in Europe without a browser may help rivals, but it could make life more difficult for European consumers, particularly those who want to upgrade their existing machines. As first reported earlier on Thursday by CNET News, Microsoft plans to ship Windows 7 to both PC makers and retail stores with Internet Explorer removed.
Microsoft and Feeding America Join Forces to Fight Hunger (Fin Channel)
More than 17 million children in the U.S. receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch at their local public schools; as schools close for the summer, these children lose access to those programs. In response, Microsoft Corp. and Feeding America are joining forces to fight hunger in the United States through the “Browser for the Better” campaign. For every completed download of Internet Explorer 8, Microsoft ’s Browser for the Better campaign (running today through Aug. 8, 2009*) will donate the financial equivalent of eight meals to Feeding America’s network of 206 local food banks, which supplies food to more than 25 million Americans each year.

SharePoint Awards 2009 (Andy Dale’s) (Andy Dale SharePoint Blog)
This week I am going to announce the first ever Andy Dale SharePoint Awards and also offer some similar Premiership football ones. June is here and as it isn’t a World Cup of European Championship summer it will seem a long time until the Premiership returns on August 15th (even longer for Setana subscribers). At least, we have the Ashes to hopefully enjoy. For any American readers ‘The Ashes’ is a tiny urn that England and Australia play cricket for every two years.

How to Implement Your Custom Business Templates in your SharePoint Departmental Document Libraries (Brain Litter)
As this is a frequently asked SharePoint question I get, I'm going to try and answer it as succinctly as possible. And as I'm a fan of screenshots (a picture is worth a 1000 words as they say), I'm going to use them as much as possible, to limit how much I have to type.
Hey SharePoint Calendar, I Want My Space Back! (End User SharePoint)
One of the things we cover in the live online Create a SharePoint Master Calendar workshop is how to reclaim the page space that a calendar sits on… hide the Quick Launch bar, title space and breadcrumbs… everything. Here a quick screencast on how we do it.
Webcast Recording on SharePoint Project Management - and Climate Change!!! (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
Yesterday we had 306 people signed up for a webcast - from about 250+ organizations. The webcast lasted just under an hour. The attendees were from all over the US and from many other countries across the world. Can you just imagine how many air miles would have been needed to make these customer visits! And the webcast will be watched by other folks who happen across it in the days, weeks and months ahead. More air miles saved! Oh and because my youngest son (aged 10) wants to cycle his bike to school I am now cycling with him and then cycling to work. So the world's climate is a small bit safer this week!

Guest Blog by HiSoftware's Founder Robert Yonaitis - Customizing the Page Editing Toolbar to Include Content Validation for the Web Content Scenario in MOSS (The Bamboo Team Blog)
In recent weeks several people have asked me how they can implement content validation in Microsoft SharePoint as a new menu item for users in such a way to allow not only for validation but also to include guidance and educational value. An additional request has been the ability to test for Accessibility in languages beyond English; specifically: Spanish, Italian, and French. This solution will cover these concerns. This blog covers content validation for: Accessibility, Link Checking, and (X)HTML Markup Validity.

How to programmatically change the currency symbol for Slovenia and Slovakia to the euro in Windows SharePoint Services and in Office SharePoint Server (KBAlertz - Microsoft Knowledge Base Article)
On January 1, 2007, the euro became the official currency of Slovenia. On January 1, 2009, Slovakia became the next European community member to adopt the euro as its official currency. Windows Server 2008 already shows the euro as Slovenia's currency, but in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 and in Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, the Slovenian tolar (SIT) is still shown as the currency symbol for Slovenia. SharePoint is based on the .NET Framework 2.0, and it uses the CultureInfo class to determine the culture information for the world's countries. The .NET Framework accesses Windows APIs to obtain this information.

Customizing a SharePoint site in your Web browser, Part 1 (Windows SharePoint Services)
When you create a site in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services, you get a good-looking, useful Web site, right out of the box. However, if you are a member of the Web Designer or Administrator site groups, you can customize your site, changing its appearance and adding functionality without using other applications or doing any programming.
Demo: Streamline business processes with forms and workflows (Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS))
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 provides many features that can help you integrate and streamline your business processes. You can use the InfoPath Forms Services server technology in Office SharePoint Server 2007 to create browser-based forms and gather data from organizations that do not use Microsoft Office InfoPath 2007. People in those organizations can complete forms in a Web browser or HTML-enabled mobile device. Workflows automatically move documents or items through a sequence of actions or tasks related to a business process. Workflows can streamline the cost of coordinating common business processes, such as project approval or document review, by managing and tracking the tasks involved with those processes.

This white paper describes how Microsoft developed the Application Templates, identifying best practices for how to work with core capabilities within both Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services and Microsoft Office SharePoint Designer 2007, with the goal of empowering customers and partners to create their own applications.
