Microsoft Windows 7 Ramp-Up Continues, Despite Legal Battles (eWeek)
Microsoft's week was one of legal maneuvers, featuring briefs submitted by Redmond in both its patent-infringement case against i4i and the Google Book Search settlement. Despite much of its news being dominated by court proceedings, Microsoft also continues to take steps in its long ramp-up to the release of Windows 7, its new operating system upon which it has pinned many of its corporate hopes.
Microsoft Does the Softsell on Windows 7 to Enterprises (Computer World)
Microsoft Corp. today touted the experience of enterprises that have already started to deploy its coming operating system, Windows 7. The software maker also released a study it commissioned to Forrester Consulting, an arm of analyst firm Forrester Research Inc., that looks at the coming needs of large enterprises -- needs that Microsoft believes Windows 7's new features can address.
Why the DOJ Wants More on Yahoo Search Deal (CNET)
The long road toward Microsoft and Yahoo's search deal could be set to get a little longer, or fall off a cliff. Both companies have long expected the U.S. Department of Justice to scrutinize the deal to install Microsoft as the exclusive search provider for Yahoo's Web pages, which would also see Yahoo end its time as a search company. Microsoft and Yahoo confirmed Friday that the Justice Department has asked the two companies for more information about their deal, which is a step beyond taking a mere interest in the proceedings.
Windows 7 Upgrade Could Take up to 21 Hours (Tech.Blorge)
If you are anxiously awaiting the release of Windows 7 in October, you may want to start preparing for the upgrade now to make sure it goes smoothly. Chris Hernandez, a Microsoft Software Engineer, took to his blog to give out some details on what Vista users can expect when they try to update Windows 7 come October 22nd. The basic idea is, even if you have a high end machine, if you have tons of data and applications, you best expect it take up to eight hours. If you are on medium hardware with the same amount of data and applications, you are looking at twenty-one hours. You might want to start laying in the supply of coffee now so that you can get through it.
802.11n Wi-Fi Finally Certified by IEEE (Gadgetell)
We’ve been seeing wireless 802.11n products for so long now, it's been easy to forget that what we’ve been using are the pre-certified units. From now on 802.11n is officially approved by the IEEE standards group. The final standard will be published by the group in mid-October, just in time for all those new Windows 7 laptops.
Bing 2.0 to be Rolled Out Next Week? (Tech Spot)
Bing has had a busy few months, but if recent rumors hold any weight, a facelift may be just around the corner. Mary-Jo Foley over at ZDNet caught wind of a few Tweets that came from Microsoft's annual company meeting, which are hinting that Redmond may roll out "Bing 2.0" this fall -- and possibly as early as next week.
The Cloud Bubble: Is Computing Becoming a Utility? (Cloud Computing Journal)
The Gartner Hype cycle research shows Cloud Computing as being on the peak of expectations… the very top of the hype bubble roller coaster. Vendors are looking for something to sell, and the consolidation of the data center, reducing operational cost and economy of scale are as convenient of an excuse as anything. There are some fundamental technologies as well that will make a big difference such as Virtualization. Is computing becoming a utility?

Viewing Public Government Data with Windows Azure and PHP: A Cloud Interoperability Scenario Using REST (Interoperability @ Microsoft)
This week Microsoft is participating in the first Gov 2.0 Summit produced by O'Reilly Media, Inc. and TechWeb in Washington D.C., to explore how technology can enable transparency, collaboration and efficiency in government. Today, we're pleased to present a cloud interoperability scenario which takes advantage of the recently announced Toolkit for PHP with ADO.NET Data Services to view public government data with Windows Azure and PHP.
Podcast: Are You Doing What It Takes to Succeed at Implementing SharePoint? (Meet Dux)
I had the great pleasure of speaking with Mitchell Ashley of Network World's Converging on Microsoft last week and discussed what it takes to successfully plan for implementing SharePoint projects. We had a very similar view of starting off SharePoint projects by identifying tangible business pain points that needs to be addressed. He mentioned the old adage, "you can't get lost if you don't know where you're going", which applies well.
PDC and the Business Intelligence Workshop (Owen Allen - The MOSS Garden)
If you’ve tried to contact me over the past month or so, then you know that I am living and breathing preparations for the SharePoint Conference 2009. That’s the big October event this year. So, you might ask – what’s the big November event? PDC 2009.
Microsoft Creates the CodePlex Foundation (Scott Hanselman's ComputerZen.com)
Very cool news. Today Microsoft announce the creation of the CodePlex foundation. That's CodePlex.org. It's amazing the amount of work that goes into something like this. I was in on a lot of very boring (but important) legal conference calls with a lot of folks from within Microsoft but it was fascinating in its own legal way. There's a lot of people who want to see this work and really be something special.
Make SharePoint 2007 Act Like SharePoint 2010 (Sort of ...) (Jan Tielens' Bloggings)
I'm pretty sure every SharePoint enthusiast has seen those great Sneak Peek videos Microsoft released some time ago. And I'm sure that lots of the new features shown were very exciting for lots of you. Since SharePoint 2010 is still quite far away in the future, let's try to bring some of the 2010 stuff to SharePoint 2007! In the overview video, Tom Rizzo showed some new user interface functionality, pretty much all of it was heavily using asynchronous Javascript code to dynamically do updates, change layouts etc. All of this of course to prevent those nasty full page reloads. One of the features that caught my eye was the inline editing of list items or documents: without reloading the page, or opening a new page, it's possible in SharePoint 2010 to edit meta data. Pretty cool! And I want to have it in my SharePoint sites, today.
Program Management Spectrum and Templates (Manage Projects on SharePoint)
This is the fourth in a series of five short posts on the work and project management spectrum. The question being addressed here is, "How do organizations manage across collections of projects?". As before there are choices based on how much management is needed, how much management is desired and how much management is affordable. For this blog entry let's label this management of many projects, Program Management.

What is SharePoint? Part 8: In Which We Address the Topic of Collaboration (Albeit Indirectly) (SharePoint Blank)
A friend asked me earlier this week, "just what is SharePoint?" and I almost laughed, thinking, "well, I've written several thousand words on the topic already, but I suspect I'm going to have to write at least a few thousand more before I'm able to answer that question in the length which I suspect you would prefer." Ultimately, after providing him with what was probably a little more of a history lesson than was desired (or necessary), I settled on something along the lines of SharePoint being an extensible content management and collaboration platform. I should note that the friend in question is fully IT-conversant, and so was not in need of further explanation as to what I had just said.

Demo: Boost teamwork with a wiki (Help and How-to)
Wiki means "quickly," and that's part of the appeal of creating your own wiki site. You and your team members can use a wiki to add, edit, and link Web pages quickly and easily. Using a wiki is almost as natural as using a blackboard in real time. On your wiki, your team can plan a conference, brainstorm your next product or campaign, develop a proposal, and more. With a wiki, you can collect and update information painlessly — as it changes. The demo shows you how to get started with a wiki site template in Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services.
